Chapter Three: Executive Eyes

470 Words
Chloe wiped the glass table for the third time, even though it was already spotless. The executive floor was too quiet, too fancy, too… unnerving. Every corner gleamed. Every surface smelled of money. Even the silence felt expensive. This wasn’t her world. She didn’t belong here. But Klein Carter had said otherwise. And no one questioned him. She hadn’t seen him all day, and part of her was glad. The way he looked at her — like he was reading her, not just seeing her — it stirred something inside her she didn’t know how to name. Just focus on the job, Chloe. Clean, get paid, go home. That was the plan. Until she heard that voice again. “You missed a spot.” She jumped and turned, her heart flying to her throat. He was leaning against the doorframe of his office, arms crossed, a half-smile on his lips. Klein Carter. Looking like he stepped out of a fashion magazine. “I—I didn’t hear you,” Chloe stammered, clutching the cleaning cloth in her hand. He walked toward her slowly. “That’s because I move quietly when I want to.” She stepped back slightly, but he didn’t touch her. Just looked at her like she was something rare. “Are you always this jumpy?” he asked. “Only around billionaires who rearrange my job without asking,” she replied before she could stop herself. Klein tilted his head. “That was bold.” “I’m sorry, sir.” “I’m not.” He took a deep breath. “I like bold.” Chloe’s cheeks warmed. She looked away quickly and focused on wiping the table again. “You don’t belong on the janitorial team,” he said quietly. She paused. “It’s an honest job.” “I didn’t say it wasn’t. But it’s beneath you.” She looked up sharply. “You don’t know me well enough to say that.” Klein’s eyes narrowed slightly. “True. But I want to.” Chloe’s chest tightened. “Why?” He stepped closer. “Because ever since you walked into my office, I haven’t stopped thinking about you.” The room went silent. Chloe’s fingers gripped the edge of the table. “Sir—” “Klein,” he corrected gently. “Call me Klein when we’re alone.” Her heart thudded. She shook her head. “This is not a good idea.” “Maybe not,” he agreed. “But I don’t always care about what’s good. Sometimes, I care about what I want.” He turned and walked back toward his office, then paused at the door. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Chloe.” Then he disappeared, leaving her breathless, confused… and deeply aware that whatever was happening between them had just begun.
