Chapter 4
She had Belle come to her room to get ready. She had sent the shoes near the door. She helped Belle to dress. As Scarlet was getting dressed, Belle sat down at the vanity and brushed out her hair. Belle had very lovely blond hair. Both women had green eyes.
“Scarlet?” Belle asked suddenly.
“What, Belle?” she asked.
“Did you know she’s pregnant?” Belle asked.
“Who?” she asked.
“Amerna!” Belle said. “I heard her being sick. I thought nothing of it. Then I heard her talking to that maid of hers. How could James do that? I had hoped he would marry you.”
“I wish people would stop saying that,” she said. “We would never have married. He doesn’t like me like that.”
“Okay, Scarlet,” Belle said. “You ready?”
“Yes,” she said. “Let’s go on down. And remember, Belle, do not say a word about the dresses. He loves her and we should make sure it stays that way.”
“Sure,” Belle said. “Let me just fix your hair for you.”
James looked around the room again. He wondered what was keeping Belle and Scarlet. Amerna had helped them, she had told him so. She happened to look outrageous in her gown with its silver hearts on it. Her hair was piled on top of her head. It had diamonds in it. Her shoes were green but plain.
He heard a gasp and turned to the stairs.
Scarlet and Belle stood at the top of the stairs. Both women had their hair down. Weaved into their hair were green beads that sparkled. As they walked down the stairs he saw that Belles gown had gold hearts on it. Scarlet’s gown was green; however every time she moved it shimmered. His gaze went to their shoes. They were green like the gowns. Belles had gold hearts on them. Scarlet’s shoes had silver hearts on them.
He suddenly remembered coming home that night. He had been stabbed on the way. Scarlet had sewn the wound. He could have sworn that she had taken care of him during his fever. When he had awoken Amerna had been in the room. He realized now that Amerna had lied to him.
“James,” Amerna said, drawing his attention to her. “It is time for the announcement.”
“Yes,” he said. “You know what, Amerna? We will do it at dinner. It is almost time for it.”
“Of course, James,” she said. “I will just go mingle.”
He watched her walk away.
“James?” Belle said.
Turning to face her and Scarlet he said, “The two of you look beautiful. Scarlet, may I talk to you a moment?”
“Of course,” she said.
He took her arm and led her away from the guest. They stood with their backs to a wall.
“Scarlet, did you take care of me?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said. “I was up when you came in. I was afraid that you had been hurt badly. You were. So, I just stitched you up. I then fell asleep. In the morning you were burning up with fever. I took care of you for a while. Then I had to go the shoe makers. When I came back Amerna was with you and you were awake. She took credit for taking care of you.”
“And you let her,” he said. “Why?”
“You love her,” she said. “And you are going to get married. She is even going to have your child.” Tears filled her eyes. “And I might as well just give up this rich life you gave me. Just give it up and do the one thing I can.”
“And what is that?” he asked.
“Be a w***e,” she said.
“A w***e?” he repeated.
“Yes,” she said. “Might as well. Mother did it. Why shouldn’t I?”
“Scarlet,” he said. “You know you don’t have to. With all the money I have given you, you could live a nice life.”
“James, don’t you understand?” she asked.
“Understand what?” he asked.
“That I love you, James!” she said.
She hurled away from him. She picked up her skirts and ran up the stairs. She slammed the door to her room. She flung herself on the bed. She began to cry.
James stood still for a moment. He then started to follow her.
“James?” Amerna asked.
“I will be right back,” he said. “I need to take care of something.”
“Sure,” she said.
James went to her room. He opened the door and stepped inside. He shut the door. He then turned the lock.
“I was coming home from a bar,” he began. “I had been with a barmaid, Holly Molly. We have been together for a while. I used to think I loved her. I was wrong.”
“Go away, James,” she said.
“No,” he said. “You want to be a w***e; I will treat you like one!”
He turned her over to face him. He began to undress her.
“James, please don’t,” she said.
“No, you want to be a w***e,” he said, “Let me be you first customer!”
He finished undressing her. He threw all her clothes on the floor. He left her in her corset, garters and shoes. She stared up at him. He began to undress himself. She gasped at him.
“Get used to it,” he said. “I am sure once your w***e career begins bigger will come your way. Men may even want to be rough with you.”
“James-” she began.
He kissed her as he lay on top of her.
“Spread your legs,” he told her.
“Will it hurt?” she whispered as she did it.
“Little,” he said.
“Okay,” she whispered.
She felt something pressing against her womanhood. Then she felt a sharp pain. She gasped.
“Remember you asked once what your mother and that man were doing?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said.
“Now you know,” he said.
He began to move over her. The pain slowly faded. She bit his shoulder. Just when she was getting used to it, he stiffed over her. She felt the wet of him inside her as he shook. He collapsed on top of her. She hugged him to her.
They stayed like that for a few moments. Then he rolled off her. He pulled her close to him.
Down stairs, Amerna made the announcement that he had been delayed.
She also said that they would be marring the next week.
