Chapter 2: The Rules of the Cage

1115 Words
The pen in my hand felt heavier than a loaded handgun. "Sign on the dotted line, Clara," Dante’s lawyer, a sharp-faced man with slicked-back hair and a suit that cost more than my brother’s monthly medical bills, muttered. He didn't look at me. To him, I was just a piece of property shifting from one ledger to another. "Once you sign, the first million is wire-transferred to the clinic’s account. The security detail is already stationed at your brother’s door." I looked up. Dante was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back to me. The city lights cast long, jagged shadows across his broad shoulders. He hadn't spoken a single word since we walked into his private study. He just watched the rain wash over the glass, a glass of bourbon resting loosely in his hand. "The security is already there?" I asked, my voice dry. "Two of my best men," Dante’s gravelly voice cut through the room without him even turning around. "No one enters that room without my personal clearance. Not the doctors, not the nurses, and certainly not your uncle." He was keeping Leo safe. But he was also holding the leash. If I stepped out of line, those guards could just as easily walk away or worse. It was a beautiful, gilded cage, and I was stepping right into it. I pressed the nib of the pen to the paper. The ink bled into the fibers. Clara Rossi. I watched my maiden name loop across the page for the very last time. From tomorrow, on paper and in the eyes of the city's syndicates, I belonged to the Vane empire. The lawyer snatched the document up before the ink was even dry, blowing on it gently before sliding it into a sleek leather folder. "Excellent. I’ll file the marriage registry first thing in the morning. Quietly, as requested. Mr. Vane, she is all yours." The lawyer bowed his head and slipped out of the room, leaving the heavy oak door to click shut behind him. The silence that followed was suffocating. The crackle of the fireplace was the only sound in the vast, shadow-drenched study. Dante finally turned around. He set his glass down on the mantelpiece and walked toward me. He didn't rush. He moved with the slow, terrifying confidence of a wolf that knew the sheep had nowhere left to run. He stopped right in front of the mahogany desk, leaning his hip against the edge. "Get up," he commanded softly. My muscles tensed, but I forced myself to stand. I had to look up to meet his eyes. Up close, the winter-frost gray of his gaze was mesmerizing and entirely devoid of warmth. "We need to establish the rules of this house, Clara," he said, his voice a low vibration that seemed to settle deep in my chest. "You are my wife now. But do not mistake a legal document for a romance. This is a transaction. And in my world, transactions have very strict terms." "I can follow rules, Mr. Vane," I said, tilting my chin up. "Rule number one," he said, ignoring my interruption. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers slowly tracing the line of my jaw. His touch sent a sudden, involuntary shiver down my spine. "In public, you are mine. You smile when I look at you. You hold my arm. You look at me as if I am the only man in the room. If anyone suspects this marriage is a sham, the old-money syndicates will look for a c***k in our armor. I don't tolerate cracks." "And in private?" I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs. "In private, we are strangers," he said, his fingers dropping from my jaw, leaving a trail of cold fire behind. "You will sleep in the East Wing. My quarters are in the West. You do not enter my wing without an invitation. Ever." "Suits me perfectly," I lied. The thought of being far away from him should have brought relief, but instead, it felt like a cold draft blowing through an empty room. "Rule number two," Dante continued, stepping even closer, narrowing the space between us until I could feel the heat radiating off his chest. "You do not touch my business. You do not ask questions about my shipping routes, my warehouses, or my associates. If you see something you shouldn't, you forget it. Immediately." "I grew up in a mafia house, Dante. I know how to keep my mouth shut." His gray eyes darkened. "I told you to call me Mr. Vane." "And the contract says I’m your wife," I countered, my Rossi pride flaring up before I could stop it. "If I call you 'Mr. Vane' in front of your house staff, they'll know something is wrong within a week. I call you Dante. Or we don't have a deal." A tense, heavy silence stretched between us. I braced myself, half-expecting him to lose his temper, to show the brutal streak that had earned him his nickname. Instead, the corner of his mouth ticked upward in a faint, dangerous smirk. "You have a spine," he murmured, his voice dangerously soft. "Let’s see how long it lasts before it snaps. Fine. Dante. But only behind these doors." "And rule number three?" I asked, wanting to get this over with. "Rule number three is the most important," he said, his eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering intensity. "No one else touches you. You belong to the Vane family now, Clara. If another man looks at you the wrong way, if another man tries to lay a finger on you, I will end him. And if you betray me? If you play the spy for your uncle or anyone else... I won't just ruin you. I will dismantle everything you care about. Do you understand me?" The threat was clear. He was talking about Leo. He was telling me that my brother’s life was entirely in his hands. "I understand," I whispered. "Good." Dante leaned in, his lips brushing against my ear, his hot breath sending a shudder through my entire body. "Your things have already been moved to the East Wing. Go. Sleep. Tomorrow, we show the city our new Queen." I didn't wait for him to dismiss me a second time. I turned and walked out of the study, my knees trembling slightly under the weight of the dark vows I had just made. As I walked down the long, echoing hallway of the East Wing, I realized something terrifying. Dante Vane wasn't just a monster I had made a deal with. He was a poison. And I was already drinking.
