The storm had upgraded from a steady downpour to a violent deluge, the thunder rattling the heavy glass frames of the East Wing. I lay awake, the neat black stitches I had sewn into Dante’s side burned into my mind. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt the rough texture of his skin and the terrifying heat radiating from him.
A sharp, metallic c***k cut through the rumble of the thunder.
I sat upright in bed, my breath instantly hitching. It hadn't come from the storm outside. It came from the lower gallery, the sound of reinforced security glass shattering under a concussive blow.
Before I could even throw back the duvet, the bedroom door burst open.
Dante stood in the doorway. He was fully dressed in a clean black shirt, though his face was drawn tight, a light sweat filming his brow from the strain on his fresh stitches. In his right hand, he held a heavy tactical pistol, its silencer already screwed into the barrel.
"Get up," he hissed, his gray eyes scanning the dark room before locking onto me. "We have a breach. Three shooters just bypassed the perimeter wall."
"Silvio?" I asked, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper as I swung my legs out of bed.
"Doesn't matter who sent them. They’re inside the main house," Dante said, stepping into the room and grabbing my forearm. His grip was firm, entirely unyielding despite his injury. He pulled me toward the attached dressing room, pressing a hidden panel on the mahogany wall. The wood slid back with a low hum, revealing a narrow, concrete-lined panic corridor. "Get inside. Do not open this door for anyone but me."
"Dante, your side...."
"I don't care about the stitches, Clara!" he growled, his face inches from mine in the shadows. The cold mask was entirely shattered, replaced by an intense, volatile protectiveness that made his gray eyes burn. "If they find you, they use you against me. I don't let anyone touch what belongs to the Vane empire. Get in."
A loud explosion rocked the lower floor, followed by the muffled, rapid thud-thud-thud of automatic weapons. The house security grid was fighting back, but the attackers were coordinated.
I stepped into the cold concrete corridor. Dante immediately hit the interior release panel, and the mahogany door began to slide shut, cutting off the dim light of the bedroom. The last thing I saw before the darkness swallowed me was the cold, lethal silhouette of my husband turning back toward the bedroom door, his weapon raised.
Inside the panic room, the air was tight, smelling of dust and dry air filters. A wall monitor flickered to life, showing grainy, night-vision feeds of the mansion’s security grid.
I watched, my heart hammering against my ribs, as two men in tactical gear stepped into my bedroom on the screen. They moved with military precision, checking the empty bed, their weapons swept low.
Suddenly, a shadow detached itself from the heavy velvet curtains behind them.
Dante moved like a ghost. Despite the massive bruise and the torn flesh on his ribs, his execution was flawless. He caught the first shooter from behind, his arm wrapping around the man’s throat while his pistol fired twice into the chest of the second attacker. The second man collapsed instantly, the silent rounds dropping him without a sound. The first shooter thrashed, trying to hammer his elbow into Dante’s wounded side, but Dante didn't flinch. He twisted his body, absorbing the blow, and snapped the man’s neck with a brutal, clinical jerk.
He let the body drop to the carpet, his chest heaving as he leaned heavily against the bedpost, clutching his right side. The fabric of his black shirt was already turning damp and dark with fresh blood. He had ripped the stitches completely open.
On the screen, a third attacker stepped into the hallway just outside the bedroom door, his rifle raised, aiming directly at Dante’s exposed back.
"Dante!" I screamed at the monitor, knowing he couldn't hear me.
Adrenaline overrode every single rule he had given me. I didn't stay in the cage. I hit the emergency override lever on the inside of the panic door. The mahogany panel slid open with a screech, and I bolted back into the bedroom.
The third shooter heard the door. He began to swing his rifle toward me, his masked face turning in surprise.
I didn't think. I grabbed the heavy crystal decanter from the nightstand, the one filled with heavy bourbon, and hurled it with everything I had. It struck the shooter squarely in the side of the helmet, shattering in a spray of alcohol and glass. The impact threw his aim off, his rifle firing a wild burst into the ceiling.
Before the man could recover, Dante moved. The Reaper unleashed.
He closed the distance in a single, terrifying stride, his face contorted in pure, primal rage. He grabbed the barrel of the rifle, twisting it out of the man’s grip with enough force to snap the shooter's wrist. Dante drove his knee straight into the man’s abdomen, forcing him to his knees, then pressed the barrel of his handgun directly beneath the shooter's chin.
"Who sent you?" Dante whispered, his voice vibrating with an absolute, terrifying malice that made the air in the room freeze.
The shooter choked, blood pooling behind his tactical mask. "The... the old man. Sergio. He wants the girl back."
Dante didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.
The muffled pop echoed in the ruined bedroom, and the final attacker slumped onto the bloody carpet.
The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the sound of the wind howling through the shattered glass downstairs and the ragged, heavy breathing of my husband.
Dante stood over the bodies, his gun lowered, his entire frame shaking from exhaustion and agony. He turned slowly to look at me, his gray eyes dark, furious, and completely blown out. He walked toward me, his boots crunching on the shattered crystal of the decanter.
"I told you," he breathed, his voice cracking as he stopped right in front of me, "to stay in the room."
"He was going to shoot you," I said, my voice trembling as I looked down at the dark stain spreading across his shirt. "You're bleeding again."
Dante didn't yell. Instead, he reached out, his large, blood-stained hand cupping the back of my neck. He pulled me forward until my forehead rested against his collarbone. He was trembling, the iron don completely stripped away, leaving only a raw, possessive instinct.
"You broke the rules, Clara," he murmured into my hair, his grip tightening until it was almost painful, anchoring me against his chest. "But you stayed."
"I told you," I whispered, my hands gripping the damp fabric of his shirt, ignoring the blood staining my fingers. "I know how to survive."
"Sergio just signed his own death warrant," Dante growled softly, his voice dropping into that quiet, lethal promise. "No one touches what is mine. Tomorrow, we burn his empire to the ground."
As the mansion’s secondary security alarms began to wail in the distance, signalling the arrival of his cleanup crews, I realized the fake contract we had signed wasn't a shield anymore. It was a declaration of war. And I was completely, deeply entangled in the Reaper's web.
