CHAPTER 4: The Reunion That Burns

1175 Words
The tension between us crackled in the air like a storm. I knew Kael would come, that his forces would chase down the rogue scout, but I didn’t care. This was my chance. I would show him, once and for all, that I was no longer the weak human he had rejected all those years ago. I was something far more dangerous. As the moon hung high in the sky, its pale light filtering through the dense trees of the Ravager Claw territory, I crouched low to the ground, hidden in the shadows. The rogue scout, a wolf from Kael's pack who had betrayed him, was running toward me, panic clear in his eyes. He didn’t see the trap I’d set. I sprang into action, my blades gleaming in the moonlight. Before the scout could react, I was on him, my knives slicing through the air with deadly precision. He tried to fight back, but it was futile. I was faster. Stronger. My bloodline had awakened, and now I was in control. I heard the rustling of leaves and the soft thudding of footsteps. Kael’s men were closing in, but they wouldn’t get to me. Not tonight. I melted back into the shadows, waiting for the moment when Kael himself would appear. Seconds stretched into eternity. Then, like a shadow stalking its prey, Kael emerged from the trees. His eyes scanned the clearing, his every sense alert. He was looking for me. He knew I was here. He always knew. “Show yourself, Celeste!” Kael’s voice rang out, deep and commanding, the tone of an Alpha who expected obedience. But I wasn’t his to command anymore. I stepped out from the shadows, my mask covering my face, the hood of my cloak pulled low to shield my identity. He couldn’t see me fully—yet. Kael’s eyes narrowed, a growl rumbling in his chest as he shifted into a defensive stance. His eyes never left me as I approached, silently, my blades at the ready. “You’ve got some nerve,” I said, my voice laced with venom. “You think you can just hunt me down like an animal?” Kael’s lips curled into a snarl. “You’re a rogue, Celeste. You broke the contract. You betrayed us.” “Betrayed?!” I laughed, bitterly. “You were the one who betrayed me, Kael. You left me for dead. I was nothing to you.” The words cut through the air, but Kael didn’t back down. He lunged at me, his claws flashing in the moonlight. We clashed in a whirlwind of fur and steel. My blades danced around him, narrowly missing, while his claws tore through the air in savage arcs. There was a rhythm to our fight, a brutal, beautiful synchronicity. We moved like two forces of nature—at once drawn to each other and repelled by the history between us. His wolf growled, low and feral, while mine stirred within me, sensing the proximity of the man who had once been my mate. My body trembled as the heat between us built. The moonlight seemed to glow brighter, responding to the pull that had always existed between us. “Why are you doing this, Celeste?” Kael grunted, trying to land a blow. “Why do you think, Kael?” I hissed, dodging his attack. “You made me into this. You turned me into something I never wanted to be.” With a growl, I pressed forward, my blades flashing in a deadly arc. I was faster than him now, quicker than I’d ever been. He tried to block, but I could see the hesitation in his eyes, the confusion. He wasn’t sure what to make of me anymore, wasn’t sure who I was. I aimed for his chest, but he swiped at me, knocking my blade from my hand. My body collided with his, and for a moment, everything was still. My heart pounded in my chest, not from fear, but from the raw power we shared, the power that had always been there between us. And then, as if driven by an instinct I couldn’t control, Kael ripped off my mask. The world seemed to slow. Time froze as his gaze locked with mine, and the recognition hit him like a tidal wave. His eyes widened, his breath catching in his throat. “Celeste…?” His voice was barely a whisper, full of disbelief and regret. I could see the shock in his eyes, the flash of confusion, and something deeper, something he didn’t want to acknowledge. The man who had once rejected me, the man who had broken me, was now looking at me as if he didn’t know me. As if he didn’t remember the woman he had abandoned. I could feel the anger bubbling inside me, the betrayal rushing back like a flood, and I pushed him back with a raw pulse of power. A wave of energy surged through me—energy I shouldn’t have been able to wield. Not as a rogue. Not as a human. Kael staggered back, his eyes narrowing in disbelief. “What…?” But before he could say another word, I vanished into the shadows, my body melding with the night as if I were nothing more than a specter. I left him standing there, his breath ragged, his chest heaving from our fight. I didn’t care. He had no right to call my name like that. He had no right to pretend like he could just step back into my life after everything he had done. I was done with him. But just as I was about to disappear into the trees, something caught my attention. A single drop of blood, my blood, stained his chest where my fist had struck him. The glow of the moonlight seemed to illuminate it, making it pulse with a strange energy. I froze, my heart skipping a beat. Kael’s eyes were locked on the blood, his hand trembling as he reached toward it. He touched the blood gently, and I saw his wolf flicker behind his gaze, the beast inside him taking over for just a moment. His eyes flashed with something wild, something primal. And then, his wolf whispered. Mate. The word sent a shiver down my spine. No. It couldn’t be. It couldn’t possibly be. But as Kael stood there, touching my blood, the realization dawned on me. His gaze was intense, almost hypnotic, as if he had forgotten everything—forgotten the rejection, forgotten the years between us. His lips parted as if to say something, but the words never came. Instead, he stared at the blood on his chest, the glow under the moonlight growing stronger, more intense. And I knew, deep down, that things had just changed forever. I turned and disappeared into the night, leaving behind a man who was no longer the Alpha I once knew. The forest fell silent. And Kael stood there, his heart pounding, his wolf whispering again. Mate.
