The agonizing, endless darkness of the tower vault gave way to the pale, sterile light of dawn. I didn't sleep. I sat in the freezing gloom, my bound wrists resting against my bruised knees, listening to the agonizing throb in my temple and the terrifying echo of Victoria’s riddles. A grand destination... A carriage arriving... When the heavy iron door disengaged at sunrise, I braced myself for the executioner's boots. I expected Beta Marcus to drag me back to the bloody snow. Instead, four silent, stone-faced head servants filed into the vault. They didn't strike me. They didn't hurl insults. With terrifying, mechanical efficiency, they unlocked my heavy manacles, hauled my trembling frame to my feet, and escorted me down the winding spiral staircase, not toward the sub-level dungeons, but into the grand royal bathhouse. What followed felt like a fever dream. Steam rose in thick, fragrant plumes from the sunken marble pool, filled with warm water, crushed rose petals, and soothing medicinal oils. The servants surrounded me, their hands moving with swift, clinical precision. They scrubbed the dried, bloody mud from my skin, their sponges working over my bruised shoulders with agonizing gentleness. They applied soothing lavender salves to the raw slice on my palm and the deep purple contusions along my ribs, whispering silent instructions to one another as if I were made of fragile glass. I sat paralyzed, my mind spinning in utter disorientation. For more than fifteen years, I had been the girl who scrubbed these very tiles until my knuckles bled. Now, servants were combing the knots from my long hair, rubbing sweet-scented oils into my skin, and painting my pale lips with blush. When they finished, two seamstresses stepped forward carrying an ornate, carved wooden box. They lifted a garment from the velvet lining, and my breath caught in my throat. It was an extraordinarily luxurious ceremonial silk gown, a deep, shimmering crimson overlaid with intricate, hand-embroidered gold thread along the bodice and long, flowing sleeves. The fabric felt like spun air against my skin, tailored so perfectly to my frame it looked as though it had been crafted for high nobility. "What is this?" I rasped, my throat raw. "Why are you dressing me in this? Where is Gerald?" The servants kept their eyes cast downward, refusing to meet my gaze. "The Alpha is waiting in the High Solar, Lady Elara," one whispered, her voice trembling slightly before bowing low and stepping back. Lady Elara. The title tasted foreign, poisonous, and terrifying. Flanked by two elite honor guards clad in polished silver armor, I was escorted down the grand marble corridor toward Alpha Raymond’s private chambers, the double mahogany doors I had spent more than two decades banned from even approaching. The guards threw the doors open, and I stepped into the warm, sunlit expanse of the High Solar. A crackling fire roared in the grand stone hearth, filling the room with the sweet scent of burning cedar and roasted meats. Heavy velvet draperies framed the tall arched windows, casting a warm, golden glow over the plush fur rugs. Standing by the hearth was my father, Alpha Raymond. Beside him stood Luna Victoria, draped in an elegant silver dress, and Beta Marcus, his hands folded neatly behind his back. I froze on the threshold, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs. I braced myself for the booming roar, the cold contempt, the sickening disgust I had received every single day of my miserable life. Raymond turned toward me. For the first time in twenty-three years... my father smiled. It wasn't a snarl. It wasn't a sneer. It was a warm, gentle, radiant smile that softened the hard lines of his face. He stepped away from the hearth, walking toward me with broad, open strides, his dark eyes brimming with what looked like profound, overflowing tenderness. "Elara," Raymond murmured, his voice rich, deep, and laced with a soft, affectionate tremble I had only ever heard him use with Tanya. He reached out, taking my freshly bandaged hands into his massive, warm palms. He squeezed them gently, as if I were the most precious treasure in the entire continent. I flinched, my whole body locking up in absolute terror. The sheer, unnatural wrongness of the gesture made my stomach turn inside out. "Look at you..." Raymond breathed, his eyes sweeping over my crimson gown with visible pride. He lifted a hand, gently tucking a strand of styled hair behind my ear. "By the Goddess, you look so much like your mother today. Beautiful. Absolutely radiant." I stared at him, my mouth slightly open, completely struck dumb. I couldn't speak. I couldn't breathe. "Come, sweet child, sit," Victoria chimed in, her voice sweet as honey, entirely devoid of the venomous rage she had spat in the tower last night. She glided forward, taking my elbow with a delicate, loving touch and guiding me toward a small mahogany table laden with silver platters of warm bread, glazed fruits, and hot tea. "You must be famished after such a long, dreadful night. Have you eaten? Please, sit and eat." I sat down on the edge of the plush velvet chair, my mind reeling in violent, frantic circles. What is happening? Why are they looking at me like this? Why is Victoria pouring my tea? "Where... where is Gerald?" I managed to choke out, my voice barely above a whisper, my hands shaking so violently the crimson silk rustled. Raymond sat down across from me, his expression melting into one of deep, sorrowful sympathy. "The guard who broke protocol? He is being treated by the pack healers, my dear. Do not trouble your precious heart with such matters today. Today is about you." Before I could process his words, the heavy side doors opened, and the master pack seamstress, accompanied by three young apprentices, stepped into the room. They carried four colossal, brass-bound leather trunks, setting them down on the fur rug with heavy thuds. The seamstress opened the lids, revealing stack after stack of exquisite, breathtaking gowns, silks of emerald, midnight blue, and crushed velvet, along with velvet cloaks lined with real mink, jewel-encrusted tiaras, and delicate leather boots stamped with royal gold crests. "Your entire wardrobe, Lady Elara," the seamstress bowed deeply, her hands folded reverently. "Only the finest fabrics in the realm, fit for the most cherished jewel of the Silverwood bloodline." I stared at the sparkling jewels, the cascading silks, and then back at my father. He was watching me with a look of pure, unadulterated devotion, leaning forward to pat my hand with a warm, fatherly grin. A suffocating, icy dread began to creep up my spine, far more terrifying than any iron blade or dark dungeon. They weren't beating me. They weren't chaining me. They were showering me with love, luxury, and praise, treating me like a revered, deeply adored royal princess. The utter absurdity of it, after a lifetime of abuse and starvation, sent a wave of nausea crashing through my chest. Why now? What do they want from me? Raymond slowly stood up from the table. The warm, loving smile remained on his lips, but as he turned toward his heavy desk, a cold, unyielding shadow flickered deep within his golden eyes. He picked up a thick parchment scroll resting on the polished mahogany, an ancient document bound with heavy red silk ribbons and sealed with a massive, blood-red wax emblem stamped with an unfamiliar, terrifying crest. Raymond walked back over to where I sat, stepping so close I could smell the cedar wood on his cloak. He looked down at me, his face a picture of solemn, tender gravity. "Elara, my darling daughter..." Raymond began softly, his voice echoing in the quiet, sunlit room as he held out the heavy parchment toward my trembling hands. "There is something very important I need to tell you." To be continued..
