Chapter 16: The Breach

767 Words
The explosion was small—controlled, precise. But it was enough. The west gate of the Velenza estate shuddered at 3:04 a.m., a puff of dust and brick blooming into the cool night air. No alarms. No panic. Not yet. Ciro didn’t want panic. He wanted precision. He stepped from the van in a black coat lined with silver thread, his gloves spotless despite the smoke curling in the air. Behind him, four men followed—silent, masked, ghosts with guns. > “Remember,” Ciro murmured, “I don’t want Zarek dead. Not yet. Bring me the pretty thing.” --- Inside — Panic Room, Velenza Mansion Zarek’s eyes flew open a second before the silent alarm buzzed once against his wrist. He rolled out of bed naked, grabbed the pistol from the nightstand, and was already at the closet panel by the time Lucien stirred. > “What is it?” Lucien whispered, voice hoarse from sleep. Zarek didn’t answer with words. He pressed the panic panel. Metal groaned as a hidden wall slid open. > “Get in.” Lucien sat up, the sheet falling to his waist. “No. Not without you.” Zarek turned, eyes hard. “Lucien—” > “I said no.” The door hadn’t even finished closing when Renzo’s voice crackled over the comm: “They’re inside. Four armed. Entry point: west gate. No casualties yet.” Zarek pulled on black pants and threw a shirt at Lucien. “Stay behind me. You move when I move.” Lucien got up, dressing quickly. “What if it’s Ciro?” Zarek looked at him for a long, cold moment. “It is.” --- Elsewhere — East Wing The security feed flickered once. Then went dark. Ciro smiled. > “Just like old times.” He moved like smoke through the corridors—familiar, confident, patient. The mansion hadn’t changed much. He knew its blind spots. Its weak spots. He’d built most of them. > “Lucien,” he whispered under his breath, tasting the name like something rare and sweet. “Let’s finally meet.” --- North Hall — Confrontation Zarek and Lucien met Renzo near the staircase. “Two in the library,” Renzo said. “One near the vault. One unaccounted for.” Zarek’s jaw clenched. “That one’s Ciro.” Lucien gripped the railing. “Then let me help.” Zarek turned sharply. “You want to help? You stay behind me. He’s not here for your blood, Lucien. He’s here for your soul. And mine.” > “Then we fight him together.” Zarek blinked. For the first time in hours, he didn’t argue. --- East Corridor — Shadow and Steel Lucien and Zarek rounded the corner into silence. Then— > “Zarek.” One word. Familiar. Too familiar. Ciro stepped out from the shadows like he’d always belonged there. Like he was still part of the house. His eyes flicked over Zarek once. Then locked onto Lucien. > “So this is him. The softness under all that stone.” Lucien met his gaze. “You’ve been watching me.” Ciro smiled. “I’ve been studying you.” Zarek raised his gun. “You get one chance, Ciro. Turn around. Walk away.” Ciro chuckled. “That’s rich. You once said I was the only person who could understand you. Has he even seen what you’re really made of?” Zarek’s jaw tightened. > “He sees me. And he stays. That’s more than you ever managed.” Ciro’s smile cracked. Just a little. > “Shame,” he said. “I would’ve treated him like glass. Right before I shattered him.” Then he moved. Fast. Gun drawn. Shot fired. Zarek tackled Lucien just in time—the bullet shattered the mirror behind them. Gunfire erupted. Renzo shouted from down the hall. Glass, splinters, smoke. Ciro vanished again. --- Later — Blood and Ash Lucien sat on the edge of the bed, chest heaving, Zarek pressing gauze to a shallow graze on his arm. > “He’s not going to stop,” Lucien whispered. Zarek didn’t answer. > “He’s going to keep coming. Keep breaking through.” Zarek looked up. “Then we stop waiting.” > “What do you mean?” > “I mean we don’t sit behind walls anymore. We take this to him.” Lucien nodded slowly. Because hiding hadn’t worked. Running hadn’t worked. And if war had already come to them—then they’d burn it back down to the bones. Together.
