I sat on the couch, lighting up a cigarette. My mind was spreading away —could it be that my wife was planning to meet her lover tonight? Was sending me to my mother-in-law's with stuff just a ploy to keep me from catching them in the act? Could it even be that my mother-in-law was supporting her affair with another man? Was my wife trying to get my mother-in-law to tie me down, so I couldn't catch her cheating?
I extinguished the cigarette and shook my head, berating myself, "Am I insane to think this way?" But then, recalling the recent scandal on the newspaper, I couldn't help but think anything was possible. Like mother, like daughter. ... "Ugh! Why am I thinking so lowly of my wife and mother-in-law?" I was tempted to slap myself. But the video I saw on Reddit yesterday, the fact that my wife didn't wear her stockings home, and that she never used to come home that late—only getting in after midnight yesterday—raised my suspicions.
Now she's gone on a business trip and won't be back tonight. And she's asking me to deliver stuff to my mother-in-law, What does this imply? It might mean nothing, but tonight I must go to Seattle to see for myself if my wife is indeed cheating. Is she really betraying our marriage, lying in bed in her lace stockings, let another man get into her, indulging in an affair? Thinking all this made me even more determined to find out whether she's actually on a business trip or out cheating.
Regardless, I have to go check on her supposed business trip location tonight. After breakfast, it was time for work. The whole way there, my thoughts were tumultuous. Recalling the sweet moments my wife and I shared, she always seemed so virtuous, gentle, and kind—not at all like someone who would cheat. We've been married for over three years now, with no children. We've discussed it; she said she didn't want kids for the next couple of years to focus on our careers and save money for a better future for them. We are quite comfortable in finance, both of us are employers in decent companies, and my wife is concerned about not having enough time to care for a child after birth.
"Good morning,John." Lucy, our office clerk, pretty and tall, always greeted me with a sweet smile, giving me the illusion she was interested in me... "Morning!"
"John, are you free tonight?" Lucy sidled closer, brushing her shoulder against my arm. My heart skipped a beat. What does Lucy want? Why does she suddenly asking me out, and why so suggestively? Is she hinting at something more? My wife loves me so much, how could I possibly betray her?
Since we got married, we've always supported and respected each other. I don't want to cheat on her. But thinking about last night, my wife was drunk and not wearing her stockings back home, telling me she won't be home tonight because of a business trip—it weighed heavily on me. "John!"Lucy looked at me pitifully.
"Sorry Lucy, I'm busy tonight." Though Lucy is attractive, she can't compare to my wife. And of course, I didn't really have time. "Alright then, I'll catch you when you're free." Lucy left with a slight smile. The day passed incredibly slowly, my mind consumed with thoughts of my wife potentially cheating on me.
Suddenly, it was time to leave work. Just as I clocked out, my phone rang—it was my wife. "Honey, have you left work?" Her voice was sweet over the phone. "Yeah, just did." "Remember to take those local specialties to my mom, okay?" She reminded me right after I got off work. "Yeah, sure." I replied briefly, wanting to ask about her trip, but for some reason, I held back. "Love you, darling! That's all for now, I'm going out to eat." She seemed in a hurry to hang up.
Just before the call ended, I thought I heard a man's voice on her end. Was I imagining things? I pinched myself hard, feeling the pain. This wasn't my imagination; I really did hear a man saying something that sounded like "birth control pill." "birth control pill?" The thought alone sent a rush of anger through me, my mind conjuring images I wished I could erase. Especially considering the intimacy shared between a husband and wife, the thought was revolting.
I hurriedly called my wife back, needing to confirm if there really was another man with her. "Hello? Honey!!" Her tender voice calmed me down instantly. "Honey, what are you doing?" "About to have dinner." "Where are you? Are you with a man?" I didn't want to ask, but I gathered my courage. There was a pause before she replied, "Yes." Then she laughed, "Are you jealous? I'm with Linda at a restaurant, and there are two men at the next table."
"Are you sure you're with Linda?" "Do you not trust me?" Her voice sounded hurt.
Accusing my wife without evidence could only lead to arguments, something I desperately wanted to avoid. "It's nothing, just asking." "Remember, don't forget to bring those specialties to my mom." She emphasized again to not forget delivering the specialties to my mother-in-law: "If there's nothing else, I'm going to eat now. okay?"
Shortly after, she hung up. Standing still, I clenched my fists, determined to give my wife a 'surprise' visit.
