The Stranger

815 Words
Nicole sat on the edge of the bed, her hands clasped tightly together as she watched the stranger stir. The morning light filtered through the thin curtains, casting a soft glow over the room. Tatsuya’s eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, he looked around in confusion, his dark eyes scanning the unfamiliar surroundings. “Where… am I?” he murmured, his voice hoarse and tinged with an accent. Nicole couldn’t quite place. He tried to sit up, but winced in pain, clutching his side. “Don’t move too much,” Nicole said quickly, reaching out to steady him. “You’re hurt. You crashed… in the forest. I found you.” Tatsuya’s eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. There was something in his gaze—something intense and searching, as if he were trying to piece together a puzzle. He spoke again, but this time in a language Nicole didn’t understand. The words were smooth and melodic, but completely foreign to her. “I… I don’t understand,” Nicole said, shaking her head. “Do you speak English? Or… Tagalog?” Tatsuya frowned, clearly frustrated. He pointed to himself and said, “Tatsuya.” Then he pointed to her, raising an eyebrow in question. “Nicole,” she replied, placing a hand on her chest. “My name is Nicole.” “Ni-cole,” he repeated slowly, his voice soft. He nodded, as if committing her name to memory. Then he gestured to the room around them and said something else in his language, his tone questioning. Nicole sighed, realizing that communication was going to be a challenge. She stood up and grabbed a notepad and pen from the desk, handing them to him. “Maybe you can draw something? Or write?” Tatsuya took the pen and paper, his brow furrowed in concentration. He began to sketch quickly, his movements precise. When he was done, he handed the paper back to Nicole. She looked down and saw a detailed drawing of a star system, with planets orbiting a central sun. One of the planets was highlighted, with a small arrow pointing to it. “This… is where you’re from?” Nicole asked, her eyes widening. “Another planet?” Tatsuya nodded, pointing to the highlighted planet and then to himself. “Tatsuya,” he said again, as if to emphasize the connection. Nicole’s mind raced. She had always believed in the possibility of extraterrestrial life, but to have proof sitting right in front of her was overwhelming. She sat back down on the bed, trying to process what she was seeing. “Okay,” she said slowly, more to herself than to him. “Okay. You’re from another planet. And you… crashed here. Why? How?” Tatsuya seemed to understand her confusion. He took the notepad again and began to draw another image—this time, a pod-like object with strange symbols etched into its surface. He pointed to the drawing and then to himself, miming an explosion with his hands. “Your ship,” Nicole said, nodding. “It crashed. But why were you here? Were you… exploring?” Tatsuya hesitated, then shook his head. He pointed to the star system drawing again and then to the sky outside the window. He made a swirling motion with his hand, as if to indicate something vast and interconnected. “Another… dimension?” Nicole guessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “You’re not just from another planet. You’re from another reality?” Tatsuya’s eyes lit up, and he nodded vigorously. He pointed to her and then to himself, making a gesture that seemed to suggest connection or unity. “You… and me?” Nicole asked, her heart skipping a beat. “What does that mean?” Tatsuya looked at her intently, as if trying to convey something important. He pointed to her chest, then to his own, and then made the swirling motion again. It was as if he were trying to say that their fates were intertwined, that they were connected across realities. Nicole felt a shiver run down her spine. She didn’t know how or why, but she believed him. There was something about Tatsuya—something that felt familiar, as if she had known him for a lifetime, even though they had just met. “Okay,” she said, taking a deep breath. “Okay. We’ll figure this out. Together.” Tatsuya smiled for the first time, a small but genuine smile that made Nicole’s heart flutter. He reached out and gently touched her hand, his fingers warm against her skin. “Ni-cole,” he said softly, his voice filled with gratitude. Nicole felt a lump form in her throat. She didn’t know what the future held, but then again she knew one thing for certain: her life would never be the same.
