Chapter Fifteen Perry crossed Hanover Square briskly and turned into the nearest alleyway. Within seconds, a voice came out of the air above him. “It was Saint?” “Yes.” “But that’s impossible! He’s so . . . He would never . . .” Perry kept walking, along the alley and then across a wide, lamplit street. He cut through a mews, where glossy horses were being harnessed to a coach. His scalp prickled faintly, telling him that Lady Violet was following him, high above the light and the bustle. Emerging from the mews, he had a choice of another wide street or an alleyway. He chose the alley. The prickling sensation intensified. “Tell me,” Lady Violet demanded from somewhere not too far above his right shoulder. Perry told her what he’d witnessed. She wanted to see the tiepin, of course.
