Chapter Two

1253 Words
Ava’s POV “I do.” Those two words and three letters felt so heavy that I couldn’t say it out loud enough. The words felt so simple, but the severity was just so heavy. I just said my vows to someone I never thought I’d get married to at all. Daniel used to be someone that I couldn’t look in the eyes, but we both stood at the altar, exchanging vows and all. It felt so much and more like a dream. We were married. Just like that. My life changed in the matter of one hour, I got married to another person entirely. And the person I was meant to get married to was nowhere to be found at all. I didn’t even notice when the car pulled up in front of the house, I was too deep in my thoughts to notice anything at the moment. At the sight of a house entirely different from the one I had picked with Leo, my heart dipped. The one we chose wasn’t as big or modern as this, we preferred something warmer, something very different and homey. But this one looked very strange and cold. “Are you coming in?” Daniel asked me, dragging me out of thoughts. “This isn’t the… where’s this?” I asked, my voice so low that it felt like I didn’t want to talk at all. He didn’t answer, he just opened the door and walked out of the car, walking through the driveway with so much precision and courage. He didn’t for once look back, I walked out of the car eventually when he stopped at the door then look back. He got inside when he saw that I was coming behind him, my walking step was a little bit slower than usual, but it wasn’t because of my gown. I had picked the lightest ball gown I could see because I wanted to dance well and have a good time at the wedding party without having to worry about body pain or anything. A lot of things changed, it felt as though I just went to the wedding venue to mark attendance. I didn’t even want to think about how the dance session went, it was horrible. Inside the house was even colder than I expected, it wasn’t the temperature coldness, but the atmosphere. Nothing was out of place, not even a single dust could be seen. But it looked like no one lived there, everything was just….there. It felt like I just walked into another person’s life and home, the constant reminder that I was just a stranger kept haunting me. “We’re going to stay here until things die down.” Daniel said, making me look away from the perfectly arranged couches. “Die down? You’re talking like we just went on a trip and we forgot to take extra clothes along with us. This isn’t what I want!” I lashed out, the pent up anger in me resurfacing. His jaw tightened, “You’re still angry.” He muttered, walking away. “I shouldn’t be? I was in love with your brother twenty four hours ago, looking forward to spending the rest of my life with him. But now I’m married to you and I barely know you! I’m in a strange house with you too. Heavens, I feel like I’m going crazy!” I yelled, pulling at my hair. “Do you want some?” I looked at him to see that he was offering me a drink, he had just poured some from the drive cart. “No.” I didn’t even like whiskey, neither was I in the mood to consume anything. “You weren’t the only one who had to adjust, Ava. Do you think I also just woke up thinking I’d marry my brother’s fiancée?” His voice was low and clipped, showing that he was on edge too. “You don’t even like me.” I mumbled. He chuckled darkly, “That’s true. But you don’t expect me to like my brother’s girlfriend right? You were his, I had nothing to do with you.” He shrugged. “You seem to have forgotten that there wasn’t a time when you weren’t rude to me. You didn’t even hesitate to show that I wasn’t welcome in your family. You clearly hated me.” “I don’t even like anyone, I hate people. Why do you think you’ll be any better?” That was true, his loneliness and coldness showed how much he didn’t anyone at all. I’ve never even seen him with anyone before. The few times we’ve met at his parents house, he was always on his phone. Then when our eyes meet, he’d throw a scowl or glare my way. The fact that every other person in the house liked me a lot and he clearly didn’t made me feel like he hated me. I even used to feel like he was jealous of Leo and I at some point. Leo…. It’s really close to twenty four hours since I heard his voice or saw his face. I miss him so much. I wished that he’d pop out from the crowd countless times when the wedding was going on, hoping he’d say it was all a prank and he had been in the hall all through. But it never happened. It was real. He was gone. I turned to look at Daniel who was in his own world and was sipping wine. He really went from whiskey to a non alcoholic wine? “Why did you do it? Be truthful with me, I know you don’t care about your family’s business that much to want to save it from flopping. Why did you step in?” I asked him. “You’ve clearly answered the question for yourself. And what makes you think I don’t care about the family’s business?” He asked me, his dark eyes a little bit glossy. “We both know you’re always doing everything to make sure it’s just your own company at the top. You don’t care about anyone’s else. You’d rather leave the damage control to your father other than stepping in like that.” He chuckled once more, pouring more wine into his cup leisurely. “You sound so sure of what you’re saying. Don’t get any other thing into your head. I stepped in because I wanted to save the day and nothing more.” He answered. “Do you know anything about Leo’s disappearance?” I asked him right away as that had been the question on my mind since. The way he just stepped in to save the situation felt like he knew Leo was going to disappear today. It was almost like he had planned everything beforehand and he was just waiting for the day. “What do you mean by that? That I kidn*pped your fiancé?” He frowned. “I mean, you’re acting like you’re not bothered by his disappearance. You just took his place so quickly. It looks like it.” I shrugged. He stood up with his drink in his hand then stormed over to me. His eyes clashed with mine, anger swirling in his. “Incase no one has ever told you this. You’re an ungrateful and spoilt brat.” And he was out of the living room just like that. My mouth was wide open in shock till he was out of sight. What a day!
