CHAPTER TWO

She stood still to endure whatever outcomes that might have ensued from her secret which she has been hiding for a long time - whatever was the reason for her past decision was now not a secret anymore. In her heart, all the beats overlapped as Jessica realized Lucas' breath was suddenly caught up at the sight of Cole's face anhoch! The boy stood in the doorway of the room where his mother was telling the news, throwing a puzzled look at the stranger whose face appeared at the door. Cole's face transforming from one of surprise to stunned and tortured as he glared at a picture of Lucas" This is Lucas?" he whispered, holding back a cough. Jessica had to stifle her sobs as she nodded. "Yes, he's our son Lucas. I really don't want it to be this way." Cole took a step closer to Lucas, who faced him with round eyes. "I never thought about this. I was sure," Cole said, full of effort in his voice. "I did not, Lucas took a step hesitantly. "Hi," he said timidly, his small voice slightly cracked. Jessica plonked herself next to him and kneeled to his eye level grinning. "Lucas, this is Mr. Cole," she explained, trying her best not to lose her composure. "He's an old friend of mine." Cole crouched down and tried to be comforting using a smile. "Hello, Lucas. It's nice to meet you. Lucas, however, his eyes still fixed on Cole attended his response with a nod. His eyes looked a mixture of curiosity and gambit. On the one hand, there was Jessica's knowledge that the behavior of the young boy was somehow exacerbated by something she had decided to do a few years ago. On the other hand, the feeling of guilt towards her own self emerged, especially when she looked at the past experience she lived on cole. Herself had pledged to Lucas that no matters associated with her past would interfere, in time Lucas ought to grow up, not affected with those beyond-me. But Cole became present, this idea crushed. Cole stood up and turned to Jessica. He couldn't believe everything he was seeing. "Why didn't you tell me?" His voice was full of resentment and challenge as he demanded the truth. "I deserved to know about my son. Jessica was second-guessing her decision as her determination waned. She took in a long breath and proceeded to respond. "I left to protect him. I thought it best for him not to grow up with the dangers of your world. I didn't want him to have that kind of life. "Cole's eyes narrowed. "And you thought hiding him from me was the answer? Cole was listening to Jessica's statements with full attention, yet the change of expression on his face after every statement was more and more grave. When Jessica finished, there was a moment of oppressive silence. Cole's eyes, which were filled with a mixture of pain and determination, were overflowing with tears . "We have to figure out how to proceed from here." That was the answer. "I want to be with the boy, but first of all, we must make sure that he is safe." Jessica nodded, with some kind of hope rising. "We will. We are going to go through this together. For Lucas's sake. But Jessica and Cole, who were sitting in that dim cabin, understood that nothing could ever again be the same between them. He had left a difficult and uncertain path behind, but he was no longer alone for the first time in his life." Jessica's anger flared. "I did what I thought was right. You were part of a world I couldn't let him be exposed to. I was trying to keep him safe." Cole made his face softer and said to Jessica, "I need to know everything." He did not shout. "Why did you leave? What happened? he asked. Before Jessica could say anything, a sudden sound of tires outside made both of them jittery. Jessica's heart raced and she trembled in fear. "It's not all safe, so be very cautious," she said and there was great graze in her voice. "Someone is probably around," she warned. "There is a threat? What do you mean?" Cole's face now set in lines of concern Jessica nodded, her voice shaking. "Yes. I don't know how much you know about the people I was trying to protect us from, but they're dangerous. They might come looking for us if they find out you're here." Cole's gravity-stricken jaw tightened in the realization of the truth. "In that case, we should move rapidly. We can't let them find Lucas". Jessica agreed as her mind continued to spin in all directions. "We have to leave here immediately. A place in which we can hide and plan our further steps is there." Cole, too, nodded, whose mind was paralyzed by the danger awaiting him. "Let's go. I'm right behind you.". Jessica packed some stuff fast and took Lucas's hand. They left the apartment through the back door, with Cole keeping pace at a safe distance. While entering the parking lot, Jessica looked around anxiously in case of trouble. All of them got in Jessica's car: Cole accumulated in the passenger seat while she and Lucas got their seats as back riders. The trust in his mom's character, although he was still a bit dizzy, was all that Lucas had. Cole kept his eyes intact on the rearview mirror when Jessica left the parking lot. After a nerve-straining ride, they found themselves at the cabin on the outskirts of town, a place she had often vis ited in an emergency.
