CHAPTER THREE

Jessica led Cole and Lucas inside, however, her heart was still pounding as the feeling of relief was replaced by the feeling of anxiety. Having come inside, Cole turned to Jessica with his face expressing both anger and worry. "We're here. Now tell me everything." A growing feeling of danger bent over the room, and Jessica took a deep breath before she started to tell her story. I have been running for my life and that of Lucas, as I discovered a change in my body as woman after we made love. I quickly rushed to a hospital few day before I went to the hospital I had vomited twice at the office and the cleaner saw me. As I came out from the hospital I noticed I was being followed by some strange and I escaped them. That same night I decided to sleep over at a friend's house, on reaching my apartment the next morning am apartment was turned up side down. It dawn on me that some persons are after my life, tears roll down as she explain to Cole. “Cole” brought out a scarf and wiped her tears as he held her softly and kissed her forehead. The cabin was silent except for the dull crackling of the fire. Jessica had not moved from her couch seat. Her thoughts whirled in confusion by what had just happened. Little Lucas lay safely sleeping in the tiny bedroom, unaware of the commotion his parents were going through just beyond his door. Cole didn't even bother to sit, his restlessness exuding from the movements he made. "We can't stay here long," he said through clenched teeth and a very low tone. "If they're searching for you, sooner or later, they'll come this far." Jessica nodded, though the spike of fear hit her. "I know; but where could we go? This was supposed to be our safe haven. He couldn't really pace anymore. Stopped, looked back, face grim. "We have to be smarter than they are. We have to stay one step ahead." He'll make a few calls to see if he could arrange something more secure. Jessica watched him, feeling the weight in her heart. "Cole, this isn't about running. We need to be thinking about Lucas. He's all that's ever going to matter, he is their target. Cole softened his eyes as he looked at her. "I have no intentions of letting anything happen to him or to you." She wanted to believe him, but years of fear and secrecy had made her cautious. "What about your business? Your life back in the city? This isn't just about us anymore. Cole shook his head. "None of that counts right now. My first priority is to keep you and Lucas safe. The rest we'll sort out afterward." Jessica let out a deep breath and slumped back against the couch, feeling the weight of her secret finally starting to lift from her shoulders, one she'd privately carried far too long. But danger lurked very near. "What if they know about Lucas? What if they know he's your son?" This people are stronger than you, Jessica pleaded. "Then we deal with them, have you forgotten whom I used to be? But we don't run until we have a plan," said Cole as his face hardened. There was a thickness of the silence that had settled between them, and the only sound was that of the crackling fire. She faced into the flames as her mind raced. Yes, Cole was right; things couldn't continue like this. But the thought of getting Lucas further dragged into the situation made her stomach twist uneasily. As the sounds of his leaving footsteps died away, Cole moved to her side in the room. "Listen," he said softly. "We've gone through so much, and I got it you probably won't believe me right now. But I need you to believe, babe. I'll do whatever it takes to keep our son safe." His eyes lifted up to hers, and her gaze darted around his features. It was only at that moment, through his gaze, that she saw the change in his face, the gravitas that she had never witnessed before. Maybe he had really changed. Maybe he was that man that she used to believe in. "I want to believe you," she said. "But I'm so scared." He took her hand in his, firm and warm. "You're not alone anymore. We're in this together. Before Jessica could respond, their attention was arrested when a sudden noise was heard from outside the cabin. The rustling was slight, but against the silence of night, it was like a thunderclap. In no time, Cole was up on his feet. His body was tight and vigilant. "Stay here," he egged in a low whisper. "I'll check it out”.
