DORIAN
Bella was gone, and I sat behind the desk in my home office, trying to work just to push thoughts of her out of my head.
The feel and taste of her lips kept pulling me away from my work. I never felt like this. Work had always come first for me, and nothing ever crept into my mind once I was working, yet here I was, struggling to focus while distracted by the thought of a woman in her twenties, a woman I was supposed to treat like a daughter.
But I had really liked the feel of her ass in my hand and her sweet moan. f**k! How sweetly would she moan if I buried my face between her legs and...
My phone rang, cutting off my thoughts, and I was glad for it, because what the hell had I been thinking? I reached over and grabbed my phone from the desk.
An unknown number was calling, and I narrowed my eyes at the digits. With a hard expression, I answered and held the phone to my ear, saying nothing.
For the first few seconds, the other end was completely silent, until someone finally spoke in a familiar voice.
“Hello, Dorian,” he said, and I leaned back in my chair.
“Why are you calling?” I asked.
“I heard you’re back in the country, and you’re a billionaire now,” he answered with a chuckle.
“Do you have anything to say?” I asked in a hard voice.
“How many lives did you throw away to make that much money?” he asked, his tone now hard too.
“Just enough to get me here,” I replied.
“There’s a big job, and I figured I should bring you in on it...”
“I don’t do that anymore. I quit a year ago,” I cut in, and the line went quiet for two seconds before he burst out laughing.
“You don’t do it anymore? Since a year ago? You’re telling me you haven’t dirtied your hands in a year?”
“I have no plans to go back to it.”
“Dorian Kane telling me he hasn’t killed in a year. That’s the last thing I’d ever believe. You’re always bloodthirsty. You can’t stop. You know that, Dorian.”
“If you don’t hang up right now, I might get bloodthirsty enough to drain the life out of you,” I warned.
“Fine, I’ll hang up, but I’m sure you’ll be back soon. You can’t walk away, you know that, but by then you’ll have missed out on this huge deal,” he said and ended the call.
I tossed my phone back onto the desk with a groan and glared at the shelf of business books across from me.
Once you were in dirty business, getting out was hard. No, it was impossible. Yet a year ago, I had done the impossible and left the mafia.
But even I, Dorian Kane, couldn’t leave completely. Leaving completely would mean exposing my life to danger and getting myself killed on the spot. I was simply inactive, and I intended to stay that way until I f*****g died.
I was done with the business that had taken everyone from me, yet I knew Victor was right. I was too bloodthirsty to ever be completely done.
The next day
ISABELLA
Chloe and I were at our usual café, and Chloe just would not stop going on and on about how much I was going to like Ethan, the guy she was introducing me to.
“He’s so f*****g handsome, and all the girls he’s been with say he’s good in bed!”
“A playboy?” I asked Chloe, frowning slightly.
“No, not a playboy. I’d never set you up with a playboy. From what I’ve heard, he’s a sweet, loyal guy,” she answered, and my face relaxed a little.
I was here with Chloe, but someone else was the only person on my mind.
“Oh, he’s here,” Chloe said excitedly, shifting in her seat. I glanced behind me and saw Ethan walking toward me.
He gave me a small smile as he came over to our table.
“Hello, ladies.” He smiled at me first, then at Chloe.
“Hi,” I smiled back, and he glanced at the empty chair and then at me again.
“Oh, please. Have a seat,” I said quickly, realizing what he was asking.
“Thank you,” he said sweetly and sat down across from me.
“Ethan, this is Bella, my best friend. And Bella, this is Ethan,” Chloe introduced us.
“Nice to meet you, Bella. You look so beautiful now that I’m sitting this close to you,” he said, leaning a little further across the table.
“You look really handsome too. Um... Chloe told me you were good-looking, and now that I’m seeing you, I think she was more than right,” I answered, and he chuckled.
“Looks like you two really hit it off. I should leave you to it. I’ve got somewhere to be. You two should get to know each other better.” Chloe gave me a quick wink as she stood up.
“Bye, then,” Ethan waved to her, and Chloe left.
“Um, Bella. I see you’ve only got a cup of coffee. Would you like something else?” Ethan asked.
“No, not really, but you should get something for yourself,” I replied.
“Sure, but I’m fine for now. Listening to your voice makes me feel better than any food could right now,” he said with a charming smile, and believe me, I would have fallen for those words. I would have loved the way he put it, but the only person I could think about right now was my father’s best friend. Dorian Kane.
I couldn’t help noticing how much deeper his voice was compared to Ethan’s. How much taller he was, how much bigger his build was, and I was absolutely certain Ethan’s c**k was nowhere near comparable to Dorian’s.
Damn it! The only reason I’d come to meet Ethan was in the hope that seeing someone else would stop me from thinking about Dorian, about how hard he’d kissed me last night, and about how badly I suddenly wanted that man. Yet this clearly wasn’t working.
“Are you okay?” Ethan’s voice broke into my thoughts.
“Yes, I’m good,” I answered quickly.
“Good,” he murmured.
“I’ve actually been seeing you around these past few weeks, and I’ve really been liking you. You have no idea how happy I was when Chloe said she’d introduce us.”
“You’re one of the hottest guys in school, and you’ve got your eye on me?” I tried to act interested in the conversation, leaning closer across the table too.
“Do you not know how hot you look? Or are you just being really, really humble?” he asked, and I laughed softly.
“Do you have a girlfriend?” I asked.
“No, but I’ll have one soon. You,” he replied, but I couldn’t help noticing he didn’t sound very confident saying it, and even though he was looking straight at me, his gaze didn’t make me feel even a quarter of what Dorian’s gaze made me feel.
This desire is sinful, Bella. You shouldn’t be craving your father’s best friend. You need to snap out of it. You need to get that man out of your head and build a relationship with Ethan, I scolded myself silently, firmly resolving to get Dorian Kane completely out of my head...
Well, at least I thought I could.
