Chapter Five

Adonis My eyes open from a deep slumber. The world looked dim with a hazy view and I rubbed my eyes to relieve the grogginess that took a few seconds to pass. The drizzle from the sky touched my skin, and I realized I was in my human form. I lay on the grass in the purple garden, but I realized something was off and jerked up. My crazy wolf was unusually quiet like a tight leash controlled its impulses. Never in my twenty-six years of life had I felt such calmness in my mind. But I couldn't explain why. It felt strange, like someone had calmed my inner turmoil. My wolf had rapid memory loss and impulse control issues, so it was impossible to piece together the events. The rain grew heavier, but I remained there. I kept questioning myself and trying to figure out what happened to me. It was a miracle not to feel the usual emptiness and moodiness that came with my transformations. Despite the rain, I remained in the garden. I was so energized that I remained in the garden despite the cold, afraid that leaving would take away the peace I was feeling. The sky was still dark, and there was silence except for the downpour and occasional flashes of lightning. I wasn't a fan of this wife-hunt contest, and I had no plans to replace Isabella, the love of my life, who had been murdered in cold blood by that bastard, Syndicate Alpha, Alexander. But I needed to marry and have children. Even if I mourned Isabella forever, life had to go on. My packmates were unconcerned about my pain and wanted me to father an heir. When the sun began rising, I heard footsteps approaching and perked up. My friends Sophia and Fred approached me and were shocked to see me drenched in the rain. Sophia clutched an umbrella, and she reached out to touch me, but I recoiled, and her lips tightened into a pucker. "We've been looking for you, Adonis," Fred said. "Are you okay? Did you shift last night?" I stayed silent. They were concerned that I suffered an episode on my own. Only my dad, closest friends, and doctors knew of my cursed wolf, as being in the public eye with such instability could ruin my reputation. "Talk to us, Adonis,” Sophia said softly as I got up. “Are you fine? Why are you outside in the rain?" “I'm perfectly fine, as you can see,” I groaned. “I've never been better. Now stop asking so many questions.” Sophia looked confused. She spoke after a brief pause. "Being out here alone and unsupervised is not good. You should have woken up one of us to keep an eye on you. And why are you smiling? You hardly do that these days." I played with a blade of grass. Sophia was right. My life devolved into resentment and hatred, and my main goal was to exact vengeance for my wife's death. "I can't remember what happened last night, but I felt something different.” They moved closer to me."Different how?" Fred questioned. "Peace. I don't know what it is, but I haven't felt this way in years. My wolf might have met someone. Unfortunately, I can't remember anything.” "Someone?" they chorused. I nodded. “I don't know. Someone? A ghost? I'm not sure who.” "Could it possibly be one of the contestants?" Sophia's tone hardened. "Do you remember anything about their hair color, eye color, or height?" “I wish I could, but everything is blurry." "Why do you sound so serious?" Fred interrupted Sophia with a nudge. "If one of the girls can tame his wolf, it's a blessing, and he must marry her.” With a sudden doubt in my voice, I added, "Or maybe my imagination is playing tricks on me.” I abruptly walked away and went into my bedroom to change out of my wet clothes. I was standing at the window, staring at the landscape, when my doctor interrupted me. "Good morning, Alpha.” He crept into the room with a tray containing multiple syringes of the drug designed to suppress my wolf side. My attention shifted from the view outside to the tray. I wasn't in the mood for any of these concoctions. "What do you want?" I snapped. "It's time to take your medication," he said softly, cautiously approaching. I turned to look out the window. "I'm sick of those, Mark. Get rid of them." Mark remained silent but didn't move. "I mean it. Get rid of them." "Alpha, you can't skip your medication for a day. You and I both know the effects of-” I tapped my fingers to release energy and glared at him. "I know you care, buddy, and I know I'm paying you a heavy amount to administer my medication, but I'm sick of it. I don't care if I lose control. The medication doesn't even seem to be working." Mark looked as if I had slapped him hard in the face. He quickly recovered and attempted to persuade me. "Alpha, think about the consequences. Consider what everyone will say-” “Read my lips. I will not. Give me three days, and I promise that if my wolf relapses, you can do whatever you want with me. Please.” Mark looked so conflicted, but after a while, he nodded. “Three days it is. I'll be watching closely.”
