Sunday afternoon was a gloomy one, the grey skies matching my somber mood. I was accompanying my mother and son, Gabriel, to Addenbrooke's Hospital for her appointment.
As we drove to the hospital, I couldn't help but feel a sense of concern for my mother's health. Gabriel, sensing my unease, reached out and took my hand.
"Mom, everything will be okay," he said, his voice filled with reassurance.
I smiled, feeling grateful for my son's support. "Thanks, sweetie. I just want to make sure Grandma is okay."
When we arrived at the hospital, we made our way to Doctor Andrew's office. He greeted us warmly and began to explain the procedure.
As we waited for the test results, Doctor Andrew offered us refreshments and made small talk. My mother seemed nervous, but I tried to reassure her that everything would be okay.
Just as we were starting to relax, Michael appeared in the doorway, a smile on his face. "Baby," he said, his eyes locked on mine.
My mother's eyes widened in surprise, and I knew she had finally figured out that Michael and I were dating.
"Michael, what are you doing here?" I asked, trying to sound casual.
"My father is here for a check-up," he replied.
Just then, Rebecca and Carlos appeared, and Carlos's eyes locked onto Gabriel. I felt a shiver run down my spine as he looked at me, his expression menacing.
"Sonia, can I talk to you in private?" Carlos asked, his voice dripping with malice.
My mother stepped forward, her eyes flashing with anger. "I don't think that's a good idea, Carlos."
But I nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. "It's okay, Mom. I'll be fine."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "Are you sure, baby?"
I nodded again, and Michael reluctantly stepped aside. Carlos and I walked a short distance away, and he began to speak in a low, menacing tone.
"Sonia, you think you're so smart, don't you? But you have no idea what's going on. You're just a pawn in a much bigger game. And if you don't do exactly as I say, you'll regret it."
I felt a chill run down my spine as I listened to Carlos's threats. I knew I had to get away from him, and fast.
As soon as I could, I excused myself and hurried back to Michael, who was watching me with a concerned expression.
"Baby, are you okay?" he asked, as soon as I reached his side.
I nodded, still trying to process what had just happened. "Yeah, I'm fine."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "I don't believe you. What did he say to you?"
I took a deep breath and repeated Carlos's threats, word for word. Michael's expression darkened with anger.
"We'll take care of him, baby," he said, his voice firm. "Don't worry."
My mother and Gabriel said their goodbyes and headed home, leaving Michael and me alone.
"Let's go get some lunch," Michael said, taking my hand. "We can talk more about this."
I nodded, feeling grateful for Michael's support. As we walked to the restaurant, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. What did Carlos want from me? And how far would he go to get it?
At the restaurant, we sat down at a quiet table and ordered our lunch. As we waited for our food to arrive, Michael took my hand and looked into my eyes.
"Baby, I'm not going to let anything happen to you," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "We'll figure out what's going on and put a stop to it."
I smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. With Michael by my side, I knew I could face anything.
As we finished our lunch and prepared to leave, Michael turned to me and said, "We'll get to the bottom of this, baby. I promise."
I nodded, feeling grateful for his support. Together, we would face whatever challenges lay ahead. After lunch, Michael drove me home, his arm around my shoulders. As we pulled up to my house, he turned to me and smiled.
"I'll take care of everything, baby," he said, his eyes locked on mine. "Don't worry about Carlos or Rebecca. I'll handle it."
I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. Michael's confidence and determination were reassuring.
He leaned in and gave me a soft kiss on the lips. "I'll see you later, okay?"
I smiled and nodded, watching as he got back into his car and drove away.
As soon as Michael left, I went inside and tried to distract myself by watching TV. But my mind kept wandering back to Carlos and his threats.
I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't even notice the time passing. It wasn't until my phone buzzed with a text from Michael that I snapped back to reality.
"Hey baby, just wanted to let you know that I'm at the hospital, talking to Rebecca," he texted. "I'll fill you in later. Love you."
I felt a surge of curiosity and concern. What was Michael going to say to Rebecca? And what would he find out?
I tried to focus on my TV show again, but my mind was racing with questions and worries. I couldn't wait to hear back from Michael and find out what he had learned.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Michael was confronting Rebecca in the hospital cafeteria.
"Rebecca, what's going on with you and Carlos?" Michael demanded, his voice low and serious. "I know you're involved with him somehow, and I want to know what's going on."
Rebecca looked taken aback by Michael's directness, but she quickly composed herself.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Michael," she said, her voice dripping with innocence.
Michael raised an eyebrow. "Don't play dumb with me, Rebecca. I know you're smarter than that. Tell me the truth. What's your relationship with Carlos?"
Rebecca sighed and looked around the cafeteria nervously. "Okay, fine. I'll tell you. But you have to promise not to tell anyone else."
Michael nodded, his eyes locked on hers. "I promise. Now tell me." Rebecca leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. "I know all about Carlos and Sonia's past, Michael. I know what really happened between them."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
Rebecca smiled, a sly glint in her eye. "Oh, I think you know exactly what I'm talking about, Michael. You're not as clueless as you seem."
Michael's face darkened with anger. "Rebecca, what's your point?"
Rebecca's smile grew wider. "My point is that Sonia isn't as innocent as she seems, Michael. She's got secrets, and Carlos knows them. And if you're not careful, he'll use them against her... and against you."
Michael's eyes flashed with anger, but Rebecca just laughed. "Oh, Michael, you're so predictable. You think you can protect Sonia from Carlos, but you have no idea what you're up against."
As Rebecca finished speaking, she stood up and smoothed out her dress. "I think that's all for now, Michael. But let's just say... you should be careful who you trust."
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Michael feeling uneasy and wondering if she had just threatened him. Michael watched Rebecca walk away, his mind racing with questions. What did she mean by her cryptic warning? What secrets did Sonia have that Carlos could use against her?
He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. He needed to talk to Sonia, to find out what was going on. But as he pulled out his phone to call her, he hesitated. What if Rebecca was right? What if Sonia was hiding something from him?
He pushed the doubts aside and dialed Sonia's number. She answered on the first ring, and Michael could hear the concern in her voice.
"Hey, baby, what's wrong?" she asked.
Michael took a deep breath and tried to summarize his conversation with Rebecca. Sonia listened in silence, and when Michael finished, she spoke up.
"Michael, I don't know what Rebecca is talking about," she said. "But I do know that Carlos is trouble. We need to be careful around him."
Michael nodded, even though Sonia couldn't see him. "I know, baby. I'll take care of it. But I need you to be honest with me. Is there something you're not telling me?"
Sonia hesitated, and for a moment, Michael wondered if Rebecca had been right. But then Sonia spoke up, her voice firm.
"Michael, I promise you, I'm not hiding anything from you. But I do think we should talk about Carlos and what he might be after. Can we meet up later and discuss it?"
Michael nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. "Yeah, baby, that sounds like a plan. I'll pick you up at 7?"
Sonia agreed, and they hung up the phone. Michael couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off, but he was determined to get to the bottom of it. He would do whatever it took to protect Sonia and uncover the truth about Carlos.
