CHAPTER ONE The Unexpected Meeting

547 Words
Isabella Okafor hated Mondays. Especially Mondays that involved difficult clients, impossible deadlines, and three cups of coffee before nine in the morning. She adjusted the strap of her laptop bag and hurried across the busy streets of Lagos, trying to ignore the knot of anxiety in her stomach. The towering glass building before her seemed to stretch endlessly into the clouds. Kane Holdings. The most powerful real estate company in the country. And home to the man everyone feared. Adrian Kane. Rumors followed him everywhere. Some called him a genius. Others called him a tyrant. Most agreed he was impossible to work with. Unfortunately for Isabella, her firm's biggest project depended on him approving her design proposal. The receptionist directed her to the executive floor. As the elevator climbed higher, Isabella reviewed her presentation for the tenth time. You can do this. You've handled worse. The elevator doors opened. Luxury surrounded her. Marble floors. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Expensive artwork. Everything screamed power. An assistant greeted her and led her down a quiet hallway. "Mr. Kane will see you now." The office doors opened. Isabella stepped inside. The man behind the desk didn't look up immediately. He continued reading a document as though she wasn't standing there. Arrogant. Finally, he lifted his gaze. And for one shocking second, Isabella forgot how to breathe. Dark eyes. Sharp jawline. Broad shoulders. The man looked like trouble wrapped in an expensive suit. "Ms. Okafor," he said calmly. His voice was deep enough to send an unexpected shiver down her spine. "Mr. Kane." He gestured toward a chair. "Sit." No greeting. No smile. Just an order. Her irritation immediately returned. She sat and opened her presentation. "I appreciate your time." "You have twenty minutes." She forced a professional smile. Then she began. For fifteen minutes she walked him through every detail of her proposal. Modern design. Luxury functionality. A concept capable of attracting elite clients. When she finished, silence filled the room. Adrian leaned back in his chair. His expression remained unreadable. "Interesting." Interesting? That was all? She had spent weeks preparing this project. "Interesting?" she repeated. One eyebrow lifted. "You expected applause?" The nerve. "I expected feedback." A faint smile touched his lips. The first sign he was actually human. "You're passionate." "I'm professional." "You're both." For some reason, the compliment irritated her even more. Their eyes locked. Neither looked away. Something shifted in the room. A strange awareness. Dangerous. Unexpected. The kind that made her heartbeat quicken. Adrian broke eye contact first. "I'll approve the proposal." Relief flooded her. "Thank you." "But." There was always a but. "I want you leading the project personally." Her smile faded. "Personally?" "Yes." His gaze remained fixed on hers. "You'll be working directly with me." Every instinct told her this was a bad idea. Yet refusing wasn't an option. This project could transform her career. She took a slow breath. "When do we start?" The corner of his mouth lifted slightly. "Tomorrow." As Isabella stood to leave, she couldn't shake the feeling that accepting this project might become the biggest mistake of her life. Or the best thing that had ever happened to her. Neither she nor Adrian knew it yet. But fate had just introduced them. And neither would ever be the same again.
