CHAPTER TEN The Kiss

678 Words
For the first time since entering Adrian Kane's life, Isabella felt like she truly understood him. Not the billionaire the magazines admired. Not the intimidating CEO employees feared. The man. The one carrying years of heartbreak beneath perfectly tailored suits and carefully built walls. And somehow, knowing his pain only made her care more. The following week brought a rare sense of peace. No misunderstandings. No arguments. No interruptions. Just Adrian and Isabella growing closer every day. One evening they found themselves back at the luxury resort project. The renovation was nearly complete. Workers had gone home. The building stood quiet beneath a sky filled with stars. They walked through the grand lobby together, admiring months of hard work. "You did this," Adrian said. Isabella smiled. "We did this." He looked around. The elegant chandeliers. The polished marble floors. The luxurious furniture. Everything looked perfect. Yet Adrian wasn't looking at the resort. He was looking at her. His gaze softened. "You've changed my life." The words caught her off guard. "What?" "You heard me." A nervous laugh escaped her. "That's dramatic." "I'm serious." He stopped walking. "So am I." The sincerity in his voice stole her breath. For years Adrian had measured success through money, contracts, and business victories. Yet none of those things had ever made him feel what he felt standing beside Isabella. Complete. "I don't know when it happened," he admitted quietly. "Maybe during one of our arguments." She smiled. "There were a lot of those." "Or maybe during that charity project." His eyes never left hers. "Maybe it was the first time you made me laugh." Her heart began racing. The air between them changed. Again. The way it always did when emotions became impossible to hide. "Adrian..." He stepped closer. "I spent years convincing myself I'd never love anyone again." The confession hung between them. Powerful. Terrifying. Beautiful. Then he reached for her hand. "I was wrong." Tears threatened to form in Isabella's eyes. Not from sadness. From happiness. Pure, overwhelming happiness. Because she felt exactly the same way. Slowly she lifted her gaze to his. "You scare me." A faint smile appeared. "Good." She laughed through her tears. "That's not a compliment." "It is if I scare you because you care." Her smile faded into something softer. Something deeper. "I do care." Hope filled his eyes. A dangerous amount of hope. Then Isabella whispered the words neither of them had expected to say so soon. "I think I'm falling in love with you." The world seemed to stop. For a moment Adrian simply stared at her. As if he couldn't quite believe what he'd heard. Then emotion swept across his face. Relief. Joy. Wonder. The kind of happiness that couldn't be hidden. Slowly he cupped her face. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to hear that." Her heart fluttered. "Then stop waiting." That was all the encouragement he needed. Adrian pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Not like the first time. This kiss was deeper. More certain. Filled with every emotion they'd been fighting for months. The fear. The longing. The hope. The love. When they finally broke apart, both were breathless. Neither wanted to let go. Neither wanted the moment to end. Unfortunately, life rarely allows happiness to remain untouched. The sound of a phone ringing shattered the silence. Adrian groaned. "Ignore it." She laughed. "What if it's important?" "It isn't." The phone continued ringing. Reluctantly he answered. His expression changed instantly. Every trace of happiness disappeared. "What?" A long silence followed. Then another. Isabella watched concern replace joy. "What happened?" she asked when the call ended. Adrian's jaw tightened. "Someone leaked confidential company documents." Her stomach dropped. "What kind of documents?" His eyes darkened. "The kind that could destroy everything." Far away, in a dark office overlooking the city, Ethan Cole smiled as he reviewed the latest stage of his plan. Years ago Adrian had taken everything from him. Now it was time to return the favor. And Isabella was about to become the perfect weapon.
