CHAPTER NINE Secrets Revealed

684 Words
The following week should have been perfect. It wasn't. Ever since their kiss, everything had changed between Adrian and Isabella. Simple conversations felt more intimate. Accidental touches lingered longer. Stolen glances carried meaning neither bothered hiding anymore. For the first time in years, Adrian allowed himself to imagine a future with someone. A future with Isabella. But fate had other plans. It happened on a Thursday afternoon. Isabella arrived at Adrian's office carrying revised project plans. The receptionist looked unusually nervous. "Mr. Kane is in a meeting." "That's okay. I'll wait." The receptionist hesitated. "He specifically asked not to be disturbed." Something about her tone felt strange. Curious, Isabella headed toward the conference room. As she approached, raised voices reached her ears. She recognized Adrian immediately. The second voice belonged to an older man. Angrier. Accusing. "You can't hide this forever, Adrian." A chill ran through her. Hide what? She stopped outside the slightly open door. "I've buried that chapter of my life," Adrian said coldly. "You buried nothing." The older man slammed something onto the table. "You owe her the truth." Isabella froze. The truth? Her pulse quickened. The meeting ended moments later. She hurried away before anyone saw her. But the words continued echoing in her mind. You owe her the truth. That evening Adrian noticed her unusual silence. "Something wrong?" She forced a smile. "No." He knew immediately she was lying. But before he could question her further, his phone rang. His expression darkened after seeing the caller ID. "Excuse me." He stepped away. Isabella watched him carefully. The conversation seemed tense. Whatever was happening clearly upset him. For the first time since they'd grown close, she felt shut out. The feeling lingered throughout the night. And the next day. Then the next. By Saturday her curiosity became impossible to ignore. Which was why she found herself standing inside a café across town. Waiting for Marcus Bennett. Adrian's closest friend. Marcus arrived looking uncomfortable. "You shouldn't have called me." "I need answers." "About what?" She leaned forward. "What's Adrian hiding?" Marcus sighed heavily. "You're not going to like this." Fear settled in her stomach. "What is it?" For several moments he remained silent. Then he finally spoke. "Five years ago, Adrian was engaged." "I know that." "No." Marcus looked directly at her. "You don't." A knot formed in her chest. "His fiancée wasn't the only person involved in the scandal." Confusion filled her face. "What do you mean?" Marcus hesitated. "She was pregnant." The words hit Isabella like a physical blow. Pregnant. A thousand thoughts raced through her mind. "Adrian never told me." "He doesn't talk about it." "Why?" Marcus looked away. "Because she lost the baby during everything that happened." Silence. Heavy. Painful. Isabella struggled to process the information. A child. A family. A future Adrian had once planned. Gone. Suddenly many things made sense. His fear. His trust issues. His emotional walls. The heartbreak must have been devastating. Yet another question remained. Why hadn't he told her? Why keep something so important secret? That evening Adrian arrived outside her apartment unexpectedly. One look at her face told him everything. "You know." She folded her arms. "You should have told me." Pain flashed across his expression. "I wanted to." "But you didn't." His voice softened. "Because every time I remember it, I relive it." For the first time she saw genuine vulnerability in his eyes. Not confidence. Not control. Pain. Raw and unfiltered. "It destroyed me, Isabella." Her anger faded instantly. The silence stretched between them. Then Adrian stepped closer. "I was terrified that if you knew everything..." His voice broke slightly. "...you'd see me differently." Isabella's heart ached. Slowly she reached for his hand. "I don't." Hope flickered across his face. She squeezed his hand gently. "You should have trusted me." "I know." "Don't shut me out again." "I won't." For a moment it seemed everything would be okay. But neither knew that elsewhere in the city, another secret was preparing to surface. One far more dangerous than the last. And this one had the power to destroy everything.
