CHAPTER FIVE The First Break

425 Words
Adrian Kane had built walls around himself for years. Strong walls. Necessary walls. Walls that had protected him from disappointment, betrayal, and heartbreak. Then Isabella Okafor walked into his life. And suddenly those walls were beginning to c***k. It started with small things. The way she laughed when she forgot to be professional. The way she challenged him without fear. The way she genuinely cared about the people around her. One afternoon they were reviewing construction progress when a young intern accidentally spilled coffee over several project documents. The poor girl looked ready to cry. "I'm so sorry, sir." Adrian's expression hardened. The entire room froze. Everyone expected an explosion. Instead, Isabella stepped forward. "It's okay." She handed the girl a tissue. "Mistakes happen." The intern looked relieved. Adrian watched quietly. Later that evening, as they rode the elevator together, he asked, "Why did you do that?" She frowned. "Do what?" "Protect her." "Because she was terrified." "She made a mistake." "And she's human." The answer lingered in his mind. Human. Somewhere along the way, he'd forgotten that. The next weekend Adrian found himself standing outside a small community center. Isabella had invited him to a charity renovation project she volunteered for. He almost didn't come. Almost. Inside, children ran around laughing while volunteers painted walls and assembled furniture. Isabella stood in the middle of the room wearing jeans and a paint-stained shirt. She looked happier than he'd ever seen her. When she noticed him, her face lit up. The sight hit him harder than expected. "You came." "I said I would." "Honestly, I didn't believe you." "That's hurtful." She laughed. The sound warmed something inside him. For the rest of the day they worked side by side. By evening they sat on the building's front steps watching the sunset. Neither spoke for a while. Finally Isabella asked softly, "Who hurt you?" The question caught him off guard. He stared at the horizon. "Why would you ask that?" "Because nobody becomes this guarded without a reason." Silence stretched. Then Adrian surprised himself. Years had passed since he'd spoken about it. "My fiancée." Isabella looked at him. He continued. "We were together for six years." "What happened?" "She betrayed me." Pain flickered across his face. "With my business partner." Isabella's heart tightened. No wonder he trusted nobody. "No one deserves that." Adrian looked at her. For the first time, there was no mask. No arrogance. No cold CEO. Just a man carrying old wounds. And in that moment, something changed between them. Something neither could stop.
