Kristin leaned forward to stay upright. She glared as the pilot turned toward the man with the radio and pointed at her and her cousin. Then all four men looked at the girls and laughed. At that moment, the helicopter lifted straight up. Kristin grabbed a flattened, faded Marlboro box under her foot and threw it at the men. The force of the helicopter’s wind slammed it to the ground. The metal bird spun off farther down the street as it made a slow and impervious way toward the rioters in Loring Park. Jacob emerged from the stairs punching the air. Sher adjusted the pack slung across her shoulders. Kristin stared as if her look could burn a hole into the sky where the helicopter had been. “Got rid of them.” Jacob tugged on his T-shirt, hoping the men in the doors had not seen him hide.
