Darren handed Jacob the joint. Jacob toked and then held it out to Sher, who sat between Joe and Tommy. She glared at him, tried to stand but lost her balance, and fell again. Jacob toked. Darren smiled at Jacob. “Are you all right, hun?” Irene asked, kneeling next to Sher and spreading her skirt over her bare feet. Kris stood frozen against the wall. “I’m Irene,” the woman said to Sher. Sher nodded. “It’s her ankle,” Kris said. “Get some ice.” Irene waved at the men. “Go.” Darren nodded. “Bring the girl to the kitchen. “Don’t be stupid,” Irene said. “She’s hurt. Bring the ice in here.” “Irene,” Darren said. “Leave it alone.” “Don’t tell me—” Irene said. “Now,” Darren raised his voice. “Be cool,” one of the men in the circle said. “Be cool, man.” He held his hand out, palm up.
