“Yah,” Sher said and looked at Kristin. Kristin stared at Sher and realized Sher and Billie were waiting for her approval. Kristin nodded. Sher had lied about her dad. They shook hands with Billie. “Five dollars a day for each of you is the best I can do.” He picked up the rope and slung it over his shoulder. “Times are tight. That okay?” “Yah.” “Yah.” “All right,” Billie said. “Be back here at six-thirty. You met Bonnie.” He tapped his knuckles on the stall next to Bonnie. “Sally. All mine down to the end. Introduce yourselves.” He turned on his heels, walked past his horses, and turned south out of the girls’ sight.
