Chapter Seven

He swept her off of her own chair and stood her up on her feet before suddenly leaning forward and knocking over his chair in the process. She had been under the impression that she was accustomed to the swiftness and power of the wolves, but he made her gasp for air. While she stood there motionless and shocked, he stalked around her until he came back to the front of the room and kissed her. It was a long, dark, and profound kiss that left her breathless for an entirely different reason. He told her that Jason had found her and decided that he needed her. "He needed you," he said. "He knew that any of his other wolves would recognize you for what you were, so he sent Rebic after you. They would have known even before you made your change. Therefore, he chose to send a wolf that was only half sane because any other animal would not have been able to successfully attack you." She was in pain, so she tried to distance herself from him. He tried to make her feel like she was someone special, but she saw through his ruse. It appeared as though he was being honest, but she was not a winner in any way. She was insignificant. She had accomplished nothing in the previous three years. He did a good job of making her feel unique and important today, but she was aware of the truth. When his hands came down on her shoulders, they were heavy, and it was impossible to put up any resistance to them. "Cassie, allow me to share some information with you regarding Omega wolves. Look at me." She blinked back the tears and, unable to resist his command, raised her eyes to glare at him. He was completely oblivious to her reaction. "Nearly one-of-a-kind," he commented as he gave her a gentle shake. "Cassie, I spend the majority of my time working with numbers and percentages. I may not be able to calculate the odds exactly, but I can assure you that the possibility that Rebic chose you at random to participate in Change is so small that it is practically nonexistent. If it were up to their natural instincts, no werewolf would ever attack an Omega. And I get the impression that Rebic is a wolf who bases his actions on very little else." "Why shouldn't they? Why wouldn't he have attacked me? What was stopping him? What exactly is an Omega, though?" As soon as Levi heard the question, the agitation that had been present in him subsided, indicating that it was an appropriate one. "You are an Omega, Cassie. I'm willing to bet that whenever you enter a room, all eyes immediately turn to you. I'm willing to bet that total strangers share things with you that they wouldn't share with their own mothers." She stared at him in complete disbelief. "You met up with Rebic this morning, right? Did he appear calm to you at any point?" "I saw Rebic," he said after a moment of hesitation. "And I believe that if he had been made in any other pack, he would have been eliminated shortly after being made because he does not have sufficient control over the situation. I have no idea why he was not there. However, I believe that you let him keep control of his wolf, and because of this, he despises you. It is not fair that you are at the bottom of your group's rankings. His hands slid down her back until he grasped both of her hands in his own. Strangely, that made me feel closer to him than his kiss did. "Outside of the normal pack rankings, an Omega wolf functions similarly to traditional Indian medicine men. They had no choice but to instruct you to cast your gaze downward, didn't they? These behaviors are ingrained in the submissive nature of wolves. You were the target of their assault. He spoke to her intently, his eyes fixed on hers, and said, "You bring peace to all those around you, Cassie." "A werewolf, particularly one that is dominant over the pack, is always on the verge of violent outbursts. After being crammed into an airplane with an excessive number of people for several hours, I arrived at the airport hankering for some kind of violent confrontation, much like a junkie hankers for his next fix. But as soon as you got close to me, the rage and the hunger disappeared." He squeezed her hands. "You are a gift, Cassie. If you are an Omega wolf in the pack, it means that more wolves in the pack will survive the transformation from human to wolf because they will have an easier time finding control when you are there. The presence of an Omega in a group makes everyone feel more at ease, which results in fewer males being killed in senseless dominance struggles. Or her." His argument was flawed in one important respect. "But what about earlier, when you were almost different due to the amount of anger you were feeling?" Something changed on his face, revealing an emotion that she didn't know him well enough to interpret, other than the fact that it was powerful. It appeared as though he was choking when he spoke because his throat appeared to be constricted. "The majority of werewolves find someone they love, get married, and then have to spend a significant amount of time with their spouse before the wolf accepts her as his mate," He broke eye contact with her and turned away before walking across the room to face the other direction and giving her his back. She missed the warmth that his body is provided, and without it, she felt chilly and isolated. Scared. He said to the wall, "Sometimes it doesn't happen that way," and walked away. "Cassie, you can let it go there for the time being. You have gone through sufficient hardship already without this." She spewed, "I am so tired of being ignorant," suddenly showing a tremendous amount of rage. "You've changed the rules on me, so you can damn well tell me what the new rules are." "You've changed all the rules on me," She was left trembling and on the verge of crying after the outburst of rage that had come on as suddenly as it had left. When he turned around, the dim lighting in the room caused his eyes to reflect it and become golden, making them appear to glow. "Fine. You would have been better off letting it go, but you crave the truth." Even though he wasn't shouting very loudly, his voice was as thunderous as it was rambling. "The wolf who is my brother has chosen you to be his mate. If you didn't mean anything to me, I never would have allowed you to endure the kind of abuse you have since you underwent the Change. But you are mine, and the idea of you getting hurt while I am powerless to stop it infuriates me to the point that not even an Omega wolf can easily calm this anger down." She was dumbfounded by the thought. She was aware that he was interested in her, but she thought that it was just a passing fancy on his part. Jason was the only wolf she knew who had been mated. She was completely oblivious to all of the regulations. What exactly did he mean when he said that his wolf had made the decision that she was to be his mate? Did she have a choice in the matter that was being discussed? Was it his fault that he aroused her without trying to, that he made her feel as if she'd known him forever and wanted to wake up next to him for the rest of her life, even though in reality she'd only known him for a few hours? He said, "If you had let me, I would have courted you gently and won your heart." "If you had let me," He did so with his eyes closed. "I'm sorry if I scared you," he said. She ought to have been terrified of the situation. In its place, she was struck by an overwhelming sense of serenity, as though she had found the center of a storm of feelings. She told him, "I don't like s*x," because, given the circumstances, it seemed like something he ought to know about her s****l preferences. As she watched, he coughed and opened his eyes, but the vivid color in his eyes had been replaced by human-like darkness. She admitted to him in no uncertain terms, "I wasn't enthusiastic before the change." "And after being passed around like a w***e for an entire year until Caroline put a stop to it, I liked it even less." She persisted even though he did not answer her question, which caused his mouth to tighten. "And you won't be able to coerce me. Never, ever again" She rolled up the sleeves of her shirt to expose the long scars that ran the length of the underside of her arm, from the wrist to the elbow. She used a silver knife to create them, and if Caroline hadn't found her, she would have used the knife to slit her own throat and end her life. "Because of this, Caroline insisted that Jason stop forcing me to sleep with any male that Jason found attractive enough. She came across me and ensured that I would not perish. After that, I went out and purchased a gun as well as some silver bullets." He gave a low growl, but she was fairly certain it was not directed at her. "I am not making any threats to end my own life. However, it is necessary for you to be aware of this fact about myself because, if you intend to be my companion, I will not be like Jason. I will not permit you to have s****l relations with anyone else. I won't do anything against my will, either. I can't take it anymore. If that makes me a dog in the manger, so be it; I'm not going to apologize for it. But if I belong to you, you had better get used to the idea that you're going to be mine." "Is there a stray dog in the trough?" It sounded like he was half-laughing but more like he just let out a gusty breath of air. He once more closed his eyes and spoke in a level-headed manner, saying, "If Jason makes it through tonight, it will come as a complete shock to me. If I do manage to survive you, I will be just as shocked as you are." He turned his gaze to her. "And very little continues to take me by surprise anymore." He moved quickly across the room, picking up his chair and placing it in the correct location as he passed each item on the floor. He came to a complete stop right in front of her and gave her a light touch on the raised chin before laughing. While maintaining his cheerful demeanor, he tucked a strand of her hair behind one of her ears. He murmured, "I guarantee that we will have an enjoyable s****l experience together." She was successful in maintaining her upright posture in some way. She had not yet reached the point where she was willing to dissolve into a puddle at his feet. "Caroline mentioned that you are a wonderful lover." Once more, he laughed. "You have no reason to harbor jealousy towards anyone. The act of having s*x with Caroline didn't mean much more to me than a good belly scratch, and I think it meant even less to her. Nothing that either of us would consider worthy of being repeated." A faint noise could be heard coming from outside the room as he reached for her hand. It is time for us to depart. While he was handing over his credit card to a younger-looking man who addressed him as "sir" and smelled strongly of werewolves, he made some polite compliments about the meal. Cassie assumed that it was the proprietor of the restaurant. As she entered the bustling pedestrian area, she turned to face him and asked, "So, where would you like to go next?" He finished putting his jacket on and sidestepped a woman wearing high heels and carrying a leather briefcase as he made his way to his destination. "A location with a lower population density." She suggested that the two of us should go to the zoo. Even though most children have the week off from school for Thanksgiving, the place is eerily empty at this time of year. Something in the window caught his attention, and he turned his head to look at it as he began to speak. He grabbed her and threw her to the ground, then fell on top of her while she was still on the ground. After a loud bang that sounded like a car engine being reversed, he jerked once and then continued to lay still on top of her.
