Chapter 3: The Rule Breaker

924 Words
The sun had barely climbed above the city skyline when Aaliyah Brooks stepped into Knight Corporation for her second day as an intern. She carried her folder, her coffee, and a cautious sense of confidence. Yesterday had been intense, but she survived. Today, she promised herself, she would stay out of trouble. Bold… but careful. Morning Challenges The office was buzzing with activity as Aaliyah walked to her desk. She kept her eyes down, her posture straight, trying not to draw unnecessary attention. She was already aware of the unspoken rules: Don’t question Alexander Knight… too much Don’t make careless mistakes Never, ever appear weak But today, she would need to break one of those rules—though she didn’t realize it yet. Her first task was reviewing a client proposal, checking for consistency and errors. Simple enough. She flipped through the pages, making notes, when a phrase caught her eye. This doesn’t match the previous document, she murmured. Normally, she might have kept quiet and passed it along. But something in her bold nature flared. No. This is wrong. I have to point it out. She hesitated, aware of the office’s unspoken rule: interns do not challenge Alexander Knight. But… her conscience would not let her ignore the error. The Confrontation Summoning courage, she walked to Alexander’s office. His door was slightly ajar. “Sir?” she asked softly. He looked up from his laptop, expression unreadable. “Yes?” “I noticed a discrepancy in the client proposal. Page 14 doesn’t match the previous document. I thought you should know before it goes to the client.” Alexander’s gaze fixed on her, sharp and calculating. For a moment, the air in the office seemed to freeze. “You questioned a company document,” he said calmly, almost as if he were testing her. “And brought it to my attention without permission?” “Yes, sir,” she said, standing her ground. Her voice was steady, though her hands trembled slightly. He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands over his chest. “Bold. Very bold.” Aaliyah swallowed. Bold… yes. But I didn’t mean to anger him. He stood suddenly, walking toward the large window behind his desk, looking out over the city. “Most interns would never have noticed this mistake. Fewer still would have dared to speak up.” Her chest rose and fell with relief. Maybe… maybe he respected boldness after all. The Warning Alexander turned back to her, eyes cold and precise. “However,” he said, “there are rules in this office. You do not question the work of the company without protocol. Boldness without discretion can be dangerous.” Aaliyah’s heart sank slightly. She had expected approval—or at least acknowledgment. Instead, she received… a warning. “Yes, sir. I understand,” she said quickly. He studied her for a moment, then nodded once. “See that you learn the difference between boldness and carelessness. You may leave now.” Office Rumors Begin Aaliyah returned to her desk, trying to focus on the other tasks. But whispers followed her. “Did you see what she did?” one coworker murmured. “She actually corrected the CEO himself,” another replied. Aaliyah flushed. She had not intended to make a spectacle. Yet somehow, her small act of courage was now the talk of the office. Bold… chaotic… definitely memorable, she thought. The Tension Builds As the morning progressed, she noticed Alexander glancing at her more frequently. Not in anger, not in praise, but… assessment. Why does he keep looking at me like that? When he walked past her desk during a meeting, their eyes met briefly. The room seemed to hold its breath, and she quickly looked away, her cheeks burning. Alexander, however, didn’t avert his gaze. For a fleeting moment, there was a spark of recognition—or perhaps curiosity—in his dark eyes. The Afternoon Incident After lunch, Aaliyah was assigned to assist a senior executive with a presentation. She carefully organized slides, double-checked notes, and rehearsed her lines silently. When the executive left the room to take a call, she realized she had a moment alone with Alexander, who had come to observe her work. “Page six,” she said quickly, pointing at a discrepancy she noticed in the presentation charts. “It doesn’t match last quarter’s figures. I thought you should know before presenting.” Alexander walked closer, his expression neutral but intense. He leaned slightly over her shoulder, reviewing the slides. “Bold again,” he murmured, almost under his breath. Her heart raced. Bold… chaotic… dangerous. But she had done the right thing. “You need to remember,” he said quietly, “boldness can be a tool—or a weapon. And it is up to you to decide which it will be.” Aaliyah swallowed, unsure if he was praising or warning her. Perhaps both. After Hours Reflection By the time the office emptied, Aaliyah gathered her belongings, exhausted but exhilarated. She had survived another day with the Cold Boss—made a bold move, received a warning, and somehow… made a mark. Walking to the elevator, she allowed herself a small smile. Bold, chaotic… interesting combination, she thought, recalling his words from yesterday. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, more rules, and more tests. But she was beginning to realize one thing: working for Alexander Knight would never be simple, boring, or safe. And maybe… just maybe… that was exactly what she needed.
