Chapter 5: Rumors and Realizations

1048 Words
The rumors spread faster than either of them expected. By the middle of the week, it seemed like everyone at Westfield High had something to say about Mason Carter and Ethan Rodriguez. Whispers followed Ethan down the hallways, sharp-edged words that cut into him no matter how hard he tried to ignore them. “Do you think they’re, like… a thing?” “Why would Mason even talk to him? He’s such a nobody.” “Maybe it’s some kind of bet or dare.” Ethan kept his head down, clutching his books tightly as he navigated the crowded halls. He’d been invisible for so long that being the center of attention felt like standing under a spotlight with nowhere to hide. Mason, on the other hand, seemed untouchable. He still walked through the school with his usual confidence, high-fiving teammates and flashing his easy grin at anyone who looked his way. But Ethan noticed the cracks in his facade—the way Mason’s smile didn’t quite reach his eyes, the way his jaw tightened whenever someone mentioned Ethan’s name. By Thursday afternoon, Ethan had had enough. He stormed into the library after school, where Mason was already waiting for their usual meeting. Mason looked up from his notebook and immediately noticed the stormy expression on Ethan’s face. “What’s wrong?” Mason asked cautiously. Ethan dropped his bag onto the table with a thud and crossed his arms. “What’s wrong? Are you serious? Have you heard what people are saying about us?” Mason leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah, I’ve heard.” “And you’re just… okay with that?” Ethan demanded. Mason frowned. “What do you want me to do about it?” “I don’t know,” Ethan said, throwing up his hands. “Maybe stop acting like it doesn’t bother you!” Mason stood up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. “Of course it bothers me!” he snapped. “You think I like hearing people talk about me like that? Like I’m some kind of freak?” Ethan flinched at the word but didn’t back down. “Then why aren’t you doing anything about it?” “Because if I make a big deal out of it, it’ll just get worse!” Mason said, his voice rising. They stared at each other for a long moment, both breathing hard from the intensity of their argument. Finally, Mason sighed and sat back down, rubbing a hand over his face. “Look,” he said more quietly. “I’m sorry this is happening. I didn’t mean for any of this to get out of hand.” Ethan sat down too, feeling some of his anger drain away but still not entirely ready to forgive Mason. “I just… I don’t get why you even care about this project—or me—if all it’s going to do is make your life harder.” Mason hesitated before answering. “Because you’re different,” he said finally. “And not in a bad way.” Ethan blinked, caught off guard by the sincerity in Mason’s voice. “You don’t care about all this high school crap,” Mason continued, gesturing vaguely around them. “You’re smart and honest and… real. And I guess I just—” He stopped himself, looking away as if he’d said too much. Ethan’s heart was pounding in his chest as he tried to process Mason’s words. For a moment, neither of them spoke. “Why are you telling me this now?” Ethan asked quietly. Mason shrugged, still avoiding eye contact. “Because I’m tired of pretending.” The next day at school was no easier for either of them. In gym class, Mason overheard Alejandro—one of his teammates—making another snide comment about Ethan while they were changing in the locker room. “What’s Carter even doing hanging out with that loser? Didn’t know he was into charity cases.” Mason clenched his fists but forced himself to stay calm as Ryan chimed in with a laugh. “Maybe Rodriguez is helping him with more than just English homework.” The group erupted into laughter, but Mason didn’t join in. Instead, he slammed his locker shut and turned to face Alejandro. “Why don’t you shut your mouth for once?” Mason said coldly. Alejandro raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by Mason’s reaction. “What’s your problem?” “My problem is you running your mouth about things you don’t understand,” Mason shot back. The room went silent as everyone turned to watch them. Alejandro smirked but didn’t push further, clearly deciding it wasn’t worth starting a fight with Westfield High’s golden boy. Mason grabbed his bag and stormed out of the locker room without another word. Meanwhile, Ethan was sitting alone in the library during lunch when Sofia texted him: Sofia: Heard some kids talking about u & that football guy… u ok? Ethan stared at the message for a long moment before typing back: Ethan: I’m fine. But he wasn’t fine—not really. He felt exposed and vulnerable in a way he hadn’t since he first started at Westfield High. And yet… there was also a part of him that felt something else entirely: hope. Because despite everything—the rumors, the whispers, the stares—Mason Carter had stood up for him today. And that meant something. That evening, as Ethan sat at home trying to focus on homework while Sofia worked on her own assignments across the table from him, his phone buzzed with another text from Mason: Mason: Can we talk? Ethan hesitated before responding: Ethan: About what? Mason: About us. Ethan stared at the screen for what felt like forever before typing back: Ethan: Okay. As soon as he hit send, his stomach twisted with nerves—but also anticipation. Because no matter how complicated things were between them right now… he couldn’t deny that part of him wanted to hear what Mason had to say. This chapter escalates the tension between Ethan and Mason as external pressures force them to confront their feelings—and each other—in ways they can no longer avoid!
