CHAPTER 4 -HIDDEN TRUTH

Lina did not expect the invitation. It arrived late in the afternoon, delivered quietly to her desk in a sealed envelope marked with the Carter family insignia. The paper was thick, expensive — the kind reserved for matters considered important within the company. Private Board Luncheon –Attendance Requested Location: Westbridge Heritage Estate She read it again and again. Family members were not usually invited to such meetings unless there was a reason.Sophie attended regularly as part of senior management.Margaret occasionally appeared when family interests were involved but Lina had never been included before. She remembered the discussion she overheard the previous night. Could this mean that things are beginning to change in her favor? _ _ _ Westbridge Heritage Estate reflected the legacy of Carter Global Enterprises:refined, powerful, built to last for generations. The estate was quiet, distant from the noise of the city, surrounded by carefully maintained land and well-cultured gardens that emphasized tradition and stability. As Lina entered the formal dining hall, conversation softened almost immediately. She felt the observation and the curiosity in their stare. Sophie approached her first, her smile graceful and composed. “I’m glad you could join us”,Sophie said. “Father believes it’s time you become more familiar with certain areas of the company”. More familiar. The phrase sounded neutral but it carried weight. Margaret stood beside Daniel Carter near the long windows overlooking the gardens. Her posture remained elegant, her expression calm. But her eyes lingered on Lina just a moment longer than usual. Lina greeted them politely before taking her seat at the long polished table. Crystal glasses reflected soft golden light across neatly arranged documents placed before each board member. Everything felt deliberate.Nothing felt casual. The luncheon began with standard updates of expansion strategies, international partnerships, projected revenue structures. Then the discussion shifted. Daniel Carter placed a document at the center of the table. “As Carter Global Enterprises continues expanding, adjustments to internal trust structures must ensure stability in the event of unexpected changes”,he said calmly. Lina remained quiet, listening carefully. “In situations where key leadership figures are unable to fulfill responsibilities”, Daniel continued, “operational authority must transfer smoothly to capable hands”. Another director glanced briefly at Lina. “And Miss Lina’s involvement in executive preparation?” Margaret answered smoothly. “Lina has always preferred quieter responsibilities”,she said. “High-pressure executive roles may not align with her temperament” That was her familiar narrative.Repeated so often it had become accepted truth. But something unexpected happened. An older board member adjusted her glasses as she reviewed a document. “I examined the contingency framework submitted last quarter”, she said calmly. Her gaze rested directly on Lina. Lina blinked in surprise. “It demonstrated unusual foresight”. A subtle pause spread across the table. Sophie’s smile remained perfect. Margaret’s fingers stilled briefly against her glass. Daniel’s attention shifted toward Lina. “You identified structural vulnerabilities in grant distribution exposure”, the board member continued. “Most analysts overlook such risk”. Lina hesitated slightly before responding. “I only completed the requested review”. The board member gave a small nod. “Most people complete what is requested. You evaluated what was not”. Another director leaned forward slightly. “You recommended layered oversight to prevent internal misuse of funds”. “Yes”, Lina answered carefully. Silence followed briefly. Then conversation resumed but something had changed. Attention had shifted. Reassessment had begun. For the first time,Lina sensed she was being viewed differently. Not as the quiet daughter. Not as the overlooked sibling but as someone capable of understanding systems others preferred not to examine closely. After the formal discussion, guests moved to the terrace overlooking the gardens. The older board member approached Lina privately. “You see patterns quickly”,she said. “I prefer clarity”, Lina replied. “Clarity often reveals inconvenient truths”, the woman said calmly. Before Lina could respond,Sophie joined them. “We are very proud of Lina’s progress”,Sophie said lightly. As though competence had been unexpected. The board member gave a thoughtful nod. “Potential should always be observed carefully”. Margaret watched the exchange from a distance. Her expression remained neutral. But Lina sensed something beneath the calm. _ _ _ On the drive back to the city,Lina allowed her thoughts to settle. The invitation had not been random. Someone had wanted her presence noticed. Someone had wanted her observed. But why now? Then a memory surfaced. It wasn't clear enough,it was more like a feeling. In her previous life, around this period, she had stumbled upon something unexpected while reviewing internal documents. Something that had unsettled her.She could not remember the exact details but she remembered the unease. The sense that something within the company had been carefully hidden. At the time, she had ignored the feeling. She had assumed she misunderstood.Perhaps she had once seen something that was not meant to be seen. Later that night, Lina kept rolling on her bed.She was finding it hard to fall asleep. She reached out for her laptop and opened the report she observed the other morning at work. The report stared back at her. That transaction. That strange routing. Her fingers moved quickly now, pulling up linked records. And then—she found it. A small connection that was hidden but undeniable. The same authorization code appeared across multiple “insignificant” transfers. Her breath slowed because now,she understood. This wasn’t a mistake. It was a system that was carefully built and hidden. And somehow, she had just stepped into it.Lina closed the laptop slowly. Her thoughts were no longer scattered. They were aligning. For the first time since waking up in this life, she felt something dangerous settle inside her. It wasn't fear, nor was it confusion. Her fingers curled slightly against the edge of the bed and a single thought formed;clear and unshakable “So this is where it all began”. _ _ _ Several floors above the executive offices of Carter Global Enterprises, one private office remained illuminated. Inside,a senior executive reviewed financial reports displayed across multiple digital screens. The data showed routine, operational expenses, subsidiary transactions and international allocations.Everything was structured precisely enough to appear legitimate. It was layered carefully enough to avoid scrutiny. For years, the system had functioned smoothly. The operation had been invisible beneath ordinary corporate activity. Until recently when a small notification appeared on the screen. User activity flagged – archival file access Employee ID: LC-047 His gaze sharpened slightly. He opened the activity log. Someone had accessed some files earlier that evening:Subsidiary expense distribution records, transport authorization summaries, administrative approval structures. Individually, these files seem harmless. But together, they are uncomfortably aligned. Most employees never looked beyond surface documentation. No one ever questioned routine authorization. Most employees never examined patterns across departments. But Lina Carter had opened the right combination of files. It might not be intentionally but she had looked close enough to matter. He leaned back slowly. “Interesting.Very interesting”. Across the room, another man sat partially in shadow. “You were correct”, the second man said quietly. “She notices details quickly”. “Yes”, the executive replied calmly. “Faster than expected”. “Do you believe she understands what she is seeing?” “No”. A brief pause. “But curiosity is often more dangerous than knowledge”. The second man nodded slightly. “You recommended her involvement in internal reviews”, he said. “We need to get her closer for better proximity”,the executive replied. “Proximity reveals intention”. “And now?” The executive studied the activity log again. “For now,we observe”. He closed the file slowly. “Continue monitoring her system access”. “And ensure future exposure remains limited”. The second man hesitated briefly. “Daniel believes her inclusion will strengthen succession stability”. “That belief is useful, there will be no room for suspicion”,the executive replied calmly. “And if she continues asking the wrong questions?” The faintest smile touched his lips. “Then inform the others, our quiet little observer may already know more than she should. We will take any measure to know how much exactly she has discovered”. Silence returned. But the atmosphere had changed. Because curiosity was no longer one-sided.
