Chapter 13Headquarters Trackless When the rainbow-shot dark and faint ringing vibrations of time travel passed away, Maxwell found himself in the largest room he had ever seen—an empty, echoing cavern, frigid as a winter ice storm but utterly still, with walls that stretched upwards until they vanished into dimness. On three sides, the room likewise stretched empty until it disappeared into shadow; but directly before Maxwell was a wall that put him in mind of Byzantine mosaic, except for one section of it, which seemed to be made of flickering flames. There was no hearth, nor sight of anything that could burn—the flames shimmered in midair, starting nowhere and ending nowhere, disappearing into the shadows at Maxwell’s feet and the shadows above his head. But the flames gave off no heat
