Chapter 28Headquarters Trackless Katarina was glad of her layered warm clothing as Maxwell grandly bowed her through the doorway that looked like flickering flame. Nor did she mind his air of exaggerated showmanship; she was the only one of the four of them who hadn’t yet visited the mysterious headquarters. “Right, then.” Elizabeth looked at the row of darkened windows with a lifted chin, as though in answer to a challenge. “It’s time to see what we have wrought.” Maxwell raised his voice. “Scheherazade?” “Yes?” The response seemed to come from all corners of the room, amplified as though by an opera house’s acoustics. Katarina raised her eyebrows in an attempt to show no more surprise that that. “Scheherazade,” Maxwell said, “this is Katarina Rasmirovna. She will be joining us.”
