Chapter 5
Mate Pull
Ethan's POV
After the night with the assassins, more rogues came in and there was only one reason why they were launching at once, it was to disable my hold and make me lose stability.
“Alpha, there is something you need to see.” Ryan’s voice crackled through the radio, it was low and tense.
I was driving along the coastal road when the call came, just leaving the south border patrols. The sea wind came through the half open window, it was sharp with salt and rain.
“What is it?” I asked.
“A patrol unit found a body washed up on the shore near the Shadow Cliff sector. It looks bad.”
I frowned. “Rogue?”
“Not sure it doesn’t smell like one of ours, you should come.”
“I’m on my way.”
I accelerated, tires grinding against the wet dirt road. It wasn’t the first body that washed up near our borders, but something in Ryan’s voice told me this was different.
By the time I arrived, dusk had settled over the sea. Patrol jeeps lined the cliff road, their headlights cutting through the mist. A small crowd of guards stood near the edge of the beach, whispering.
As I stepped out of my truck, there was silence and they bowed their heads immediately.
“Alpha.” Ryan greeted, stepping forward.
“Over there.” He pointed toward the surf.
A woman’s body lay on the wet sand, half-covered by seaweed, waves lapping at her legs. Her clothes were torn, her skin was pale and bruised.
I moved closer. “Who found her?”
“Patrol team.” Ryan said.
“They thought that she was dead, but… I don’t know Alpha, something about her scent.”
I crouched down beside her and my boots sank slightly into the soaked sand. Her hair was long and dark, clung to her face. She looked broken like the sea had spit her out after destroying her.
“She is not one of ours.” I muttered.
“No.” Ryan confirmed.
“But she is not a rogue either; her scent is… different.”
I was about to stand up when something hit me. It was an invisible pull that nearly stole my breath.
My chest tightened, the air shifted, sharp and electric.
Mate the word thundered through me before I could stop it.
For a second, I did not move my mind, fought it, denied it, but my wolf surged forward, growling low and eager.
She is ours.
I reached out before I realized I had moved my hand and brushed her cheek.
The moment my skin touched hers, heat shot through me, strong enough to burn. I jerked back, heart hammering.
Ryan noticed. “Alpha? What is wrong?”
“Nothing.” I said quickly. “She is… cold.”
I leaned down again, pressing my fingers to her throat. At first it was nothing, there was no pulse, just skin, clammy and still.
Then, faintly there was a heartbeat. It was weak, irregular, but there my wolf roared inside me.
“She is alive.” I said sharply.
Ryan blinked. “What? That is impossible. She has been in the water for hours!”
“She is alive!” I snapped.
“Get the med team now and clear the area!”
He sprang into action, shouting orders. The guards scattered, some calling through their links, others running for stretchers.
I focused on her face. She was barely breathing, her lips trembled, her eyelashes fluttered slightly. Bruises marked her neck; it was thick, purple, like someone had strangled her.
I gritted my teeth.
Whoever did this to her had not just tried to kill her, they had made sure that she would suffer before she died.
The medics arrived fast; two wolves shifted back into human form, rushing down with blankets and equipment.
“Careful.” I ordered.
“Don’t move her head too much.”
One of them knelt. “Alpha, she is in critical condition. Hypothermia we need to get her back immediately.”
“Do it.” I said.
They wrapped her in blankets and loaded her onto the stretcher. Her head tilted slightly as they lifted her, and her face turned toward me. That was when I saw her eyes.
They opened just for a moment faint gray with a ring of gold.
She looked straight at me, lost and broken.
Her lips parted and a whisper escaped. “Father…”
Then she went limp again.
“Move!” I barked.
The medics hurried toward the trucks. I followed right behind, Ryan keeping pace.
“Alpha, what do you think happened to her?” He asked.
“She was beaten.” I said flatly.
“Thrown into the sea to die whoever did it did not want her body found.”
Ryan frowned. “Should we alert the council?”
“No.” I got into the truck.
“Not yet no one outside the Shadow Fang pack knows about her and I want it to stay that way.”
He nodded. “Un
derstood.”
Every time she took a shallow breath, I felt that same pull in my chest stronger now.
. My wolf paced inside me, restless.
