Chapter FiveLavina came down to breakfast punctually at eight-thirty.
She found to her surprise that the only other person there was the Marquis.
He rose from the table as she entered and said,
“Good morning! You are more punctual than I believed possible!”
“I am usually downstairs before this,” Lavina answered without thinking.
She saw the silver entrée dishes on the side-table and walked towards it.
She remembered her mother telling her that in big houses the servants did not wait at breakfast.
“It is difficult to know what to choose to eat from this enormous display!” she said.
“Are you hungry?” the Marquis asked.
He was thinking as he spoke that most of the Gaiety Girls with whom he had been involved were very careful what they ate.
