Chapter 7

Brett’s POV The meeting was set to resume in two minutes and Leah still isn’t back in the conference room. This isn't like her. I try mindlinking her, but she has the connection blocked. She isn’t answering mine or Gabe’s texts either. Gabe nods his head towards the other side of the table where the Beta of Fallen Oak is sitting by himself furiously texting and glancing at the door every ten seconds. Alpha Silas is missing too. You think he’s with her? Whatever happened when they showed up this morning was very strange. I mind link Gabe. Yeah, you think they know each other? Maybe from that Alpha conference a few years back? Maybe, but why would they act so strange? Maybe they f****d, Gabe replied casually. I nearly spit out my water. Not that Leah fills us in on her s*x life, because she’s practically my little sister and hearing about it would make me want to murder someone, but I know for a fact she never sleeps with Alphas. She was afraid it would cause too much drama. So that definitely wasn’t it. “Come on,” I tell him out loud. “She’s probably just in her office and lost track of time. We’ll get her.”  Gabe gives me a look but stands up anyway. Leah never loses track of time. I tell the Councilmen we will be right back and quickly leave the conference room. As I head up to Leah’s office, all kinds of thoughts are running through my head. She’s been acting strange ever since Fallen Oak showed up. Maybe she did sleep with their Alpha. But she knew Fallen Oak was coming and seemed totally fine until she laid eyes on him. s**t, could he be her mate? But no, she would’ve told us right? Her office door is closed and for once she didn’t call us in before we even got to the damn door. Just as I raise my fist to knock, the door swings open and I’m standing face to face with Alpha Silas. “Ohhh s**t,” I hear Gabe mutter next to me. Silas just stands there with a cocky grin on his face. Leah looks like she’s about to die of embarrassment, her face is so red. “Good afternoon, gentleman,” Silas says casually, like him being in Leah’s office is the most normal thing in the world. We both give him a quick nod and mutter awkward hellos. He steps aside for the two of us to come in and I look over Leah trying to see if she’s ok. “Leah are you alright? You weren’t answering our links or texts.” “Ah s**t,” she replied and pats her pocket to find her phone. Realizing it’s not there she looks behind her until her eyes spot something crumbled up on the floor in the corner. Her tomato red cheeks become  even redder as she rushes over to pick up the crumbled thing on the floor, which I realize is a pair of pants and quickly pulls her phone out of it. Um what? What the hell happened here? My protective side is flaring. Leah, Gabe and I all grew up together and were raised in the same house practically as siblings. But, when Leah started to develop and no longer looked like a little girl, my feelings started to change too. I was totally in love with her from freshman to senior year, though I never said a thing. Then we both turned 18 and I realized we weren’t fated mates. I gave up on the love thing after that. We were much better suited as best friends and brother and sister. That didn’t make hearing or thinking about her s*x life any easier. Especially with this cocky Alpha who’s just standing there smirking, amusement in his eyes. I took a sniff, “Uh Leah, why does this room reek of s*x?” “Holy s**t,” Gabe yelled before Leah had the chance to respond, “I told you they were f*****g!” “What?!?” Leah yelled, “We were not!”  She’s chewing on her bottom lip, something she always does when she is nervous. “Leah, what the hell is going on here?” She sighed, “Silas, this is Brett and Gabe, my Beta and Gamma, best friends and biggest pains in my asses. Guys, this is Silas. He’s um, he’s my mate.” Gabe and I stand there staring at her, our mouths wide open. “Um, say that one more time?” Gabe asks. “He’s my mate. We realized it when he arrived today. That’s why I was acting so weird. I’m sorry.” There is so much I wanted to say, but I definitely didn’t want to say it in front of Silas. Of course I'm thrilled Leah has finally met her mate, but I know she had reservations about it, and I had quite a few of my own. Sensing our reluctance to talk with him around, Silas nods and looks over at Leah, “Alright I’m gonna head back down to the meeting. I'm sure Garrett is flipping the f**k out. I’ll buy you guys some time but hurry back down, I’m sure the council is already pissed.”  He leans down and gives Leah the sweetest kiss on her lips and gently thumbs her face, pulling a stray hair behind her ear. He already looks so devoted. Maybe he isn’t such an asshole after all.  Giving Gabe and I a quick nod, he leaves the room. “We really have to get going.” Leah said anxiously, trying to get by us. Gabe and I block her path. “Hold on a second, Babe,” Gabe told her, “We just want to make sure you’re ok.” Her cheeks are still totally flushed and she’s going to chew her damn lip off if she doesn’t stop biting it soon. “Yeah. I’m fine. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you right away. I’m just really overwhelmed. Silas and I haven’t even had a chance to talk yet.” Gabe raises an eyebrow at her, “Oh I bet you haven’t” gesturing to her pants and panties that are crumpled in a pile behind her desk. “Oh shut up. We really didn’t have s*x. He just, uh, touched me, you know, down there.” I did not need to know that. “I do not need to know that. As long as you weren’t forced, please keep the details to yourself.” “No of course I wasn’t forced. He’s been great actually. But I can’t get my hopes up until this meeting is over and I can have a proper conversation with him. Also please don’t say anything. We do not need the entire region in my business.” “Of course we won’t say anything. Leah, we really are happy for you. I know we'll have a lot to talk about over the next few days or so, but please enjoy the fact that you found your fated mate. This should be the best day of your life, not the most stressful.”  No, instead leave the stressing to me.  Leah give us each a hug, tears filling her eyes, “Thank guys. You really are both the best. We’ll figure this out.” “Yes we will. Come on let’s head back.”  We follow Leah out of the office and she locks the door behind us and we make our way back into the conference room.  Of course everyone turns to stare at us as we walk in, ridiculously late. “Nice of you to join us, Alpha Giammetti,” Councilman Everett sneers. Leah turns red but keeps eye contact, “I apologize for our tardiness. There was an urgent pack matter we had to take care of.” She sits in her seat with no further explanation, and Gabe and I followed her. Silas’ eyes never leave Leah as she makes her way to her seat. Leah, on the other hand, is purposely avoiding him. After we all settle and the council begins laying out the groundwork for the alliance, I take the opportunity to zone out and mind link Logan. I know Leah would be able to handle whatever is going on and make sure our pack was properly represented and our missing wolves got the same attention as the rest. While she looks after the pack, I’ll look after her. Hey Logan, I mind linked, but include Gabe in our conversation. Hi Beta, what’s going on? Logan responds. He always insists on calling Leah and I by our titles unless we’re drinking together. Can you do me a favor and get all the information you can on Alpha Silas Davis?” From Fallen Oak? Um, ok, can I ask why? Sure, Gabe interrupts our connection, Because Brett is a creepy snoop getting involved where he doesn't belong. I am not a creepy snoop, asshole. I’m just trying to protect Leah. Um, Beta?  Logan asked. Please Logan just do it. You can ask Mikey for help if you need it. Mikey was our resident hacker. He would be able to get all of the information we could possibly want. Ok... Logan replied hesitantly. I sigh. I know he isn’t going to let it go. Not that he was one to question orders, but if I was purposely leaving Leah out of our connection, which I am, and Gabe is also opposed to my order, it’s only natural to wonder what the hell was going on. Listen, Alpha Davis is apparently Leah’s mate. I just want to make sure his intentions are good. But please keep this between us. She doesn’t want anyone knowing yet. And you don’t want her to know you’re spying on her mate, Gabe retorts. I hope no one is paying attention to us. This mind link is going on way longer than I intended. And what do you mean he’s supposedly her mate?  Nothing. I’m just being cautious. Please Logan? Just do this for me? Sure, Beta. But just so you know, if Leah finds out, I am 100% putting the blame on you. And you should, baby, Gabe tells him, Don’t get yourself involved in his mess. I sure as hell won’t. I cut them off and attempt to pay attention. I know Logan would do as I ask even if he isn't happy about it. Now I could focus on whatever was going on around me.  Silas POV We were actually getting somewhere now. After much insistence by Leah, all of the packs agreed to the benefits of a group training of all our warriors. My pack, Crescent Moon, and Red Oak, the three strongest packs in our region, all agreed to volunteer 4 of our strongest warriors. Between the 12 of them and our Betas, they would come up with a joint training routine using all of our knowledge. They would then go pack to pack training all of the warriors and making sure they were all on the same page. There would be no weak links between the packs.  We would also have volunteers from each pack agree to join a task force of sorts. Well two separate task forces. One would be an investigation unit. One of my pack members works for the FBI and he already agreed to assist us in getting equipment and information to help try and locate the missing wolves. Separately we weren’t doing s**t, but together maybe something would come up. The other one would be a Special Ops task force. Their sole purpose would be to mobilize and help a pack, should an attack happen. With the help of witches, we would be able to quickly transport members of the task force to the attack. There was a lot of logistics to be worked out and of course a s**t ton of arguing happening, but I felt good that there was a plan.  And Leah is a f*****g genius. Every minute I watch her, I was falling more and more in love with her, and I still haven't  had a real conversation with her. I can’t wait to get to know her better, to get her to drop these walls she has so firmly built around her. I've had a permanent hard on since I’ve seen her this morning. If I can’t get her in my bed tonight, I will definitely be jacking off to the image of her ass in those black pants in my shower later. She’s still avoiding me like the f*****g plague though. The only time she spoke to me or even looked my way was if I was addressing the entire group. But that’s ok. We’ll get there. Maybe I need to talk to my mom. She’d understand better what it’s like to be a female Alpha and why she’s being so f*****g stubborn about this. And I need to find out what the hell is going on with her Beta. He keeps staring at me, and I noticed him mind linking for long periods of time. Not that it means anything, if something is going on with their pack, it make sense Brett’s handling it since Leah was busy with the meeting. But still, my instincts say he is up to something and my instincts are never wrong.  Finally the meeting is called for the night. Every minute watching Leah from afar is f*****g torture.  Leah announces that dinner is being held in the mess hall for anyone who’s interested and everyone began to file out. I linger waiting for her, as did Brett and Gabe and that f*****g pervy Alpha from Blood Moon. “You coming Si?” Garrett asks me. “Nah you go ahead. I’m gonna wait for Leah.” Garrett looks over at my mate who’s busy packing up her bag with a stupid ass grin on his face.  “Yeah ok. Should I expect you back at our cottage tonight?”  That’s a good question and sure as f**k I hope the answer is no. “I don’t know man. I’ll let you know.” Garrett squeezes my shoulder in moral support and heads out of the conference room. The pervy Alpha is now talking to my mate. Just seeing him standing so f*****g close to her make my skin crawl. He basically has Leah backed up into the conference table, trapping her with his hands on either side of her. King began growling in my head. Who is that talking to mate? I ignore him and walk to where Gabe and Brett are still standing off to the side. They are far enough away so that they don’t look like they’re interfering, but close enough to hear every word that fucker says to her. The fact that neither moves, combined with their tense body language, lets me know they’re just as uncomfortable with the situation as I am. And while I’m pretty sure Brett is up to something regarding me, I already know the two guys would protect Leah with their lives. “What’s up with that asshole?” I ask the guys when I walk up to them. “Who Alpha Peters?” Brett all but growls his name. “Is that his name? Yeah. Why the f**k is he so close to her? And how come we’re not stopping it?” I include myself in the we. As much as I want to barge in there and rip him to shreds, there’s a reason Brett and Gabe aren’t touching him. I would be damned if I did something to upset my mate before she even accepted me. “Leah won’t let us. She can handle him. Please let her deal with it, she wouldn’t want you undermining her authority.” I growl at his words. I’m not undermining her authority, I’m protecting my f*****g mate. But I get what they are saying. So I just stood there like a f*****g i***t next to them waiting to see what happens.  “Alpha Peters, it’s been a long day. I really don’t have the energy to argue with you. And my answer has always been and will always be no. I am only keeping this alliance with you as good faith because of how close my father was to your family. But no way in hell will I ever strengthen it with a marriage.” Kingston tries to force himself to the surface so fast I have to grab hold of the chair in front of me to keep my bearings. He wants to marry mate.! You have to kill him! Chill the f**k out King. I can’t kill the fucker. Leah would be pissed. We have to let her handle this. Kingston’s not happy with my answer, but at least he stops trying to shift. I feel an arm on my shoulder and see Gabe looking at me with concern. “Are you ok?” “Uh, yeah, sorry. I had to have a little conversation with my wolf.” “Yeah, us too. Our wolves hate the guy too. She’s like a little sister to Brett and I, and our wolves are just as protective of her as we would be our mates. But trust me, she’s good.” I look back over at Leah, and I have no idea what the guy just said, but the look of disgust on her face implies it isn’t good. Suddenly she grabs the asshole’s arm, twisting it so he is turned with his back towards Leah, his arm pulled painfully behind his back.  He lets out a pathetic yelp that only causes Leah to pull tighter. “Consider this your last warning Alpha Peters. If you ever say or do anything like that again or ever attempt to undermine my authority or my ability to lead again, I will end our alliance. See how well your pack does without my assistance. What was your debt up to again? Well over a million? I’d love to see what would happen if I’m no longer there to stop them from collecting.” What the hell is that about? What are the terms of this alliance? I know I can’t ask yet, but one day I will find out more. Leah twists one more time bringing the asshole to his knees. The pathetic jackass is screaming his f*****g head off like she ripped off his damn arm. How did he even become an Alpha?  Finally, Leah lets go, leaving the fucker lying on the floor wailing in pain. Goddess, that shouldnt be so f*****g sexy. She doesn’t look back as she walks up towards us. Looking over at Gabe and Brett, she tells them, "I told you I wouldn't punch him." Brett barks out a laugh while Gabe shakes his head. Clearly I missed something. "It's only day one Leah. You still have plenty of time." "Besides didn't you say you wouldn't touch him at all?" Leah's eyes widen taking up most of her face. "That was not part of the bet! And besides that DID NOT count! Asshole had way more than that coming." What the f**k did that mean? What did I miss? What did he say to her? I looked at Brett and Gabe, who look as confused as I was.  Leah doesn’t give us a chance to ask though. She just shrugs and jerks her head towards the door signaling it’s time to go. All three of us follow her like little puppy dogs. What the f**k am I doing? I never just follow a girl around mindlessly. But this isn’t just some random girl. This is my mate. And I know I’d do whatever I could to make her happy.
