The storm came three days later.
By evening, the sky had turned almost black.
Sienna was driving home when the rain became so heavy that she could barely see the road.
Then the car stopped.
She turned the key again.
Nothing.
Sienna grabbed her phone.
No signal.
Outside, rain hammered against the windshield.
Then she saw something standing near the trees.
At first, it looked like a person.
Then it moved.
Too quickly.
She locked the doors.
The figure stepped into the road.
Its eyes reflected the headlights.
The creature moved closer.
Then something hit it from the side.
Kieran.
He appeared from nowhere.
The two figures disappeared into the trees. Sienna couldn't move.
She heard branches breaking.
A low growl.
Then silence.
Kieran stepped back onto the road.
His shirt was torn, but his breathing was calm. Too calm.
He looked at her.
His eyes were red.
Sienna stepped out of the car.
"Kieran."
He looked away.
"Get back inside."
"What was that?"
"Something dangerous."
"I saw it."
"I know."
"What are you?"
Kieran didn't answer.
Sienna stepped closer.
His eyes returned to normal.
"What are you?"
He closed his eyes briefly.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
"I'm a vampire."
Sienna stared at him.
The rain continued falling.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
"Then why tell me?"
"Because you've already seen too much." She shook her head.
"This isn't real."
"I wish it weren't."
"What was that thing?"
"A vampire."
"Another one?"
"Yes."
Sienna looked toward the trees.
"Why was it here?"
Kieran looked at her.
"It followed me."
Her stomach tightened.
"How many are there?"
"I don't know."
"Are they coming here?"
Kieran didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
