Eva wasn't able to get anything more out of Thane on their way back to town. He remained silent even after they returned to town, more intent on watching the people around them than on anything they were doing.
To Eva's frustration, Thane never passed up an opportunity to open a door, help someone cross a street or carry something heavy. Though he didn't talk much, he smiled at everyone and always spoke to each person with the same respectful, courteous tone.
Eva focused on other matters, taking pictures of herself all over town and visiting every shop and business that would let them in. By evening, Eva accumulated enough trinkets and souvenirs to give one to every member of her TV crew.
