Chapter 4

Mia’s locker slammed shut, echoing down the empty hallway, but her mind was elsewhere, spinning, racing, and pounding. She could still feel Jordan’s lips against hers, soft, teasing, electric. Her heartbeat hadn’t slowed, not even a little, and the memory of the kiss made her knees weak. She turned to head to class, her bag heavy over her shoulder, only to find the hallway unusually crowded. Students whispered in clusters, glancing at her, giggling under their breath. A strange, prickling sensation crawled up her spine. Something was… off. “Mia!” a voice called. She turned to see her friend, Lila, rushing over, her eyes wide. “Did you… uh… see it?” “See what?” Mia asked, confused. Lila’s eyes darted nervously around, lowering her voice. “The video… the kiss. You and Jordan. It’s… everywhere.” Mia froze. “What? No! That’s… impossible!” But it wasn’t. As she reached for her phone, she saw the flood of notifications, messages from classmates, group chats, even strangers from other classes. Everyone was talking about her and Jordan. Her stomach dropped. Lucy’s face appeared in her mind, her smirk, the faint shadow at the rooftop. Mia’s chest tightened as realization struck. Lucy… she must have don't that Her hands shook as she scrolled through the messages: “Did you see Mia and Jordan?? 😱” “First kiss at school? Wild!” “Finally! Mia’s got a man!” “Wait… Ethan’s gonna freak when he sees this 👀” Mia’s phone slipped slightly in her hands. Her mind was a whirlwind. Jordan? The kiss? How did everyone know? Her first kiss, private, stolen in what she thought was a secret… now broadcast for the entire school. And then, footsteps. Familiar ones. Ethan. He appeared beside her, his expression dark, unreadable. His jaw was tight, his eyes stormy. “Mia…” he said, his voice low, clipped. Mia looked up, panic rising. “Ethan… I...” “Don’t.” His tone stopped her instantly. “I saw it.” Her stomach sank. “You… you what?” He didn’t answer. He only looked at her, a mix of hurt and disbelief flashing across his features. The hallway suddenly felt impossibly small. The laughter and whispers of students felt like knives.... Lucy appeared nearby, pretending to casually pass by, but Mia noticed the faint curl of her lips. She didn’t need to see the phone in Lucy’s hands to know what had happened. The pieces fell together, and a cold ache spread through her chest. Ethan’s hand tightened around his backpack strap. “I trusted you, Mia. I… I don’t even know why I thought…” He stopped, swallowing hard, unable to finish. Mia felt tears prickling her eyes. “Ethan, wait… it wasn’t like that. It...Jordan… it was private. It wasn’t supposed to happen. I...” But Ethan stepped back, shaking his head. “I can’t. Not now.” And with that, he walked away, leaving her frozen in place. The rest of the day was a blur. Whispers followed her everywhere. Classmates giggled behind their hands. Some pointed. Others nudged friends and nodded toward her. Every glance felt like a dagger. Jordan, for his part, was unfazed. He approached her after the last class, leaning casually against the doorway, a charming smirk on his lips. “Looks like the world finally knows about us,” he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face Mia’s chest tightened. “It wasn’t supposed to be… public! It was our moment!” Jordan’s expression softened. “I know… but sometimes, moments like these have a way of escaping. Don’t worry… I’ve got you.” His words, meant to be comforting, only made the chaos swirl inside her more. I don’t even know what I feel anymore… And then there was Lucy. She appeared suddenly beside Mia, casual, almost friendly, but her eyes gleamed with something darker. “Tough day, huh?” she asked sweetly, a dangerous edge in her voice. “I’d help you fix it… if I could.” Mia turned to her, chest tightening. “Lucy… why?” Lucy shrugged, perfectly innocent, yet her smirk betrayed her. “Sometimes you have to… shake things up a bit. People see the truth eventually.” Mia’s stomach churned. Everything she had trusted ,Ethan, her friends, even herself, felt unstable now. The kiss, the rumors… it was too much, too fast, and yet she couldn’t look away from the storm. Jordan reached out, brushing his hand lightly along hers, a silent reassurance. Mia leaned slightly toward him, her emotions raw, her heart split in two. But the tension wasn’t over. Ethan had vanished for now, but Mia knew he wasn’t gone forever. And Lucy… she wasn’t done. As the sun dipped low, painting the school in gold and shadows, Mia felt the weight of the day press down on her. She was trapped between loyalty, desire, and heartbreak. And worse… she had no idea what was coming next. The final bell rang, and as she turned toward the exit, her phone buzzed. A new post had appeared online. It was a picture, a still frame from the kiss, perfectly captured, posted anonymously. Mia’s heart stopped. “Guess who’s officially taken? 😉” The school would see it in the morning. Rumors would explode. And she knew, without a doubt, that nothing , not Ethan, not Jordan, not even her friends would ever be the same again..
