Chapter 1

Mia’s hands shook as she shut her locker for the third time. Not because she was nervous about going home but because she was waiting to see who would walk toward her when the hallway finally emptied. The final bell had rung, and students rushed past her in noisy waves, laughing, shouting, already free. Mia stayed where she was, heart pounding, pretending she wasn’t counting every second. If Ethan didn’t show up, she would know something was wrong. And if he did… she wasn’t sure she was ready for what he might say. Ethan had always been part of her routine; pack up, wait, walk home. Every day. No questions. But today, the space beside her locker felt heavier, charged with something unfamiliar. Mia hugged her bag to her chest, trying to steady her breathing, trying not to hope. “Hey.” His voice was enough to make her look up instantly. Ethan stood there, hands in his hoodie pockets, eyes fixed on her like he had been searching for the right moment. The way he looked at her made her stomach tighten. Mia’s lips curved into a smile she hoped looked natural. “Hey,” she replied softly, clutching her bag a little tighter. Ethan leaned against his locker across from hers, hands shoved into the pockets of his hoodie. His gaze lingered on her longer than usual, and Mia felt a rush of something she couldn’t name. She wanted to tell him everything she felt wanted to confess all the things she had kept buried for so long but the words lodged somewhere deep in her throat. Before she could gather herself, a familiar voice cut through the air. “Well, aren’t we adorable?” Lucy appeared beside them, smiling but her eyes stayed on Ethan, not Mia. The smile didn’t quite reach them. Mia glanced at Ethan, who tensed subtly, his jaw tightening for a fraction of a second. Lucy’s presence always made things… complicated. “Lucy,” Mia said cautiously, forcing a laugh. “We’re just… walking home.” Lucy’s smirk didn’t waver. “Sure, sure. Just the two of you, huh?” She tilted her head, eyes flicking between them. “Makes me feel left out.” Mia swallowed, fighting the irritation bubbling inside her. Lucy had been acting strange lately, distant when Mia needed her, subtly mocking whenever Ethan looked her way. And now, in this moment, Mia felt a pang of something she couldn’t quite name: unease. “Hey,” Ethan interjected softly, his voice low but firm. “We’re fine. Let’s go.” Lucy chuckled, but there was something sharp in it. “Relax, Ethan. I’m just saying. Don’t make me feel lonely here.” Mia’s stomach twisted. She wanted to push back, to tell Lucy to stop, but she didn’t. Not yet. Instead, she turned her attention back to Ethan. His expression was gentle, tentative, almost painfully sincere. Ethan slowed his steps, fingers tightening around the strap of his backpack. “I… um,” he said quietly. “There’s something I want to tell you.” Mia’s heart skipped. She stopped walking. This was it; the moment she had replayed in her head a hundred times. Before she could respond, a strange unease crept up her spine. She glanced back toward the school gates. Someone was standing there. Tall. Still. Watching. Ethan shifted beside her, his jaw tightening slightly, as if he felt it too. “Well,” Lucy said suddenly, stepping closer, her smile sharp, deliberate. “You gonna tell her… or chicken out like last time?”Ethan’s head snapped toward her. “Lucy.” She lifted her hands, amused. “Relax. I’m just saying. Timing matters.” Mia’s cheeks burned. She wanted to scream, to tell Lucy to stop interfering, but the words didn’t come. Instead, she forced a small smile. “I… I understand,” she whispered to Ethan, trying to sound calm. He blinked, searching her eyes for a reaction. “You do?” Mia nodded, though the truth was far more complicated. She wanted desperately to tell him that she felt the same way, that she had for years, but fear and hesitation held her back. Lucy, meanwhile, looked on, her eyes flashing something Mia couldn’t read something sharp, possessive, almost painful. Mia realized, with a sudden pang, that Lucy wasn’t just teasing. She was watching Ethan too, her expression hinting at feelings that hadn’t been spoken aloud. The walk home began in awkward silence, leaves crunching under their shoes, the crisp autumn air filling the space between them. Mia tried to focus on simple things , the rustling branches, distant laughter, the gentle sway of the streetlamps; anything to calm the storm inside her. But it was impossible. Ethan’s gaze kept flicking toward her, and each glance made her chest tighten. She wanted to confess, to bridge the gap that had grown between “what is” and “what could be,” but every time she opened her mouth, the courage vanished. Lucy, for her part, seemed to notice the tension. Her hands clutched her bag strap, jaw tight, eyes narrowing subtly. Mia realized with a sinking feeling that Lucy’s envy her unspoken affection for Ethan, made her a quiet but potent obstacle. “Maybe you two are just too dramatic,” Lucy said finally, breaking the silence. “Honestly, I can’t tell if you like each other or just like making me anxious.” Mia wanted to argue, to tell her to stop, but Ethan’s hand brushed hers almost imperceptibly. A fleeting touch, but enough to send shivers through her. He looked at her, hesitant, unsure, like he was balancing between confession and retreat. She opened her mouth to speak, but then movement at the school gates caught her eye. A figure appeared; tall, confident, commanding attention even from this distance. His hair was perfectly styled, his gait effortless, as if he belonged in the center of a spotlight that no one else could see. Mia froze. Something about him made her stomach twist in an unfamiliar way. Lucy’s eyes followed hers, and a small, sharp laugh escaped her lips. “Oh… that’s the new transfer. Jordan. Heard he’s from another school… popular, obviously. Bet he’s here to shake things up.” Mia’s heart skipped. Jordan. The name alone seemed to carry weight. She didn’t know why, but the thought of him approaching made her chest tighten. Ethan’s brow furrowed, subtle tension rippling through him. Mia caught the fleeting look, a mixture of caution and… protectiveness? She couldn’t be sure. Jordan’s gaze swept the students casually, then settled on Mia. A slow, deliberate smile curved his lips, and for a moment, the world shrank to just the three of them. Lucy nudged Mia, her voice low but pointed. “Looks like someone’s got his eyes on you already.” Mia’s breath hitched. She looked at Ethan, whose expression had shifted , jaw set, hands tightening slightly in his pockets, eyes darkening with something she couldn’t name. For a fleeting second, Mia imagined herself confessing everything to Ethan. The words would tumble out, raw and honest. But before she could even think of speaking, Jordan took a confident step closer, his presence undeniable, his smile unwavering. Mia’s chest tightened. She didn’t know what was about to happen, but she s
