The wolf in his arms took his full attention then, pushing its paws against his thighs and springing away, its long claws leaving deep, warm pocks of red in Wilt’s legs. As soon as it was free from his grasp it turned and leaped at him again, keeping its front legs high to swat any resistance away and clear the path for its jaws to sink home. It had performed the move hundreds of times, against hundreds of victims, human and animal, and it hadn’t failed once. Until now. Once the wolf had pushed free, Wilt had rolled to his feet and leaped, his back legs changing momentarily into the long, elastic muscles of a cat, sending him high toward the ceiling. His hands had shot out, claws digging into the wooden beam above as he flipped over the wolf, landing directly behind it just as it jumped
