12 Wilt was shaken roughly awake and the canvas above him whipped away to reveal a clear dawn sky. He sat up and saw Pete scuttling around the wagon, untying ropes and flipping clasps. Pete worked quickly, collapsing the canopy and packing it away in a small wooden trunk. He seemed younger than ever this morning, no longer bleary eyed and broken. Wilt noted that he hadn’t smelled the stench of alcohol on Pete’s breath in days. Pete pushed the trunk to the foot of Wilt’s bed. ‘Here. Put it with the others.’ Wilt stumbled out of the wagon and took hold of the trunk. ‘Where—’ ‘Higgs will show you.
