Chapter 3: Best Friends Know

750 Words
The next morning felt heavier than the one before. Amara stood in front of her mirror again, staring at her reflection like it might suddenly change overnight. It didn’t. Her dark hair was messy from sleep, her eyes swollen from crying, and the same oversized sweatshirt hung loosely around her body. For a moment, she considered not going to school at all. Everyone must know by now, she thought bitterly. Jason Reed was not the type of person who kept things private. If anything, he probably enjoyed the attention. Amara sighed and grabbed her backpack. Avoiding school wouldn’t fix anything. If she wanted to move forward, she had to face it. The hallway buzzed with students when she arrived. Lockers slammed. People laughed. Groups gathered around gossiping like usual. But as Amara walked down the hall, something felt different. Eyes followed her. Some curious. Some sympathetic. Others… amused. Her chest tightened. They know. She kept walking, pretending not to notice. Just as she reached her locker, someone grabbed her arm. “Amara!” The voice was familiar. Lily Harper. Amara’s best friend. Lily had wild curly hair, bright eyes, and the kind of energy that filled every room she walked into. Normally, she looked cheerful and carefree. Today she looked furious. “What happened yesterday?” Lily demanded. Amara froze. “I… what do you mean?” she asked weakly. Lily crossed her arms. “Don’t even try that with me,” she said. “I heard what Jason did.” Amara’s heart sank. Of course Lily heard. Everyone probably had. “He broke up with you in the cafeteria,” Lily continued, her voice rising. “In front of everyone!” Amara looked down at the floor. “I didn’t want to talk about it,” she muttered. Lily’s expression softened slightly. “Why didn’t you call me?” she asked gently. Because Amara didn’t want to cry again. Because she didn’t want to hear the truth spoken out loud. Because if she said the words, they would feel even more real. “I was tired,” Amara said quietly. Lily studied her face carefully. “You cried all night, didn’t you?” Amara didn’t answer. She didn’t need to. Lily sighed and pulled her into a hug. Amara stiffened at first, then slowly relaxed. Her best friend always smelled like vanilla perfume and mint gum. For the first time since yesterday, Amara felt something warm instead of painful. “You know Jason’s an i***t, right?” Lily said bluntly. Amara gave a weak laugh. “Maybe,” she said. “No maybe about it,” Lily insisted. “Dumping someone like that? In public? That’s just cruel.” Amara leaned against the locker. “Maybe he was right,” she said softly. Lily’s eyes widened. “Excuse me?” Amara hesitated. “He said I’ve let myself go,” she admitted. The words felt even worse when spoken aloud. Lily stared at her like she had just heard something ridiculous. “Okay first of all,” Lily said, raising a finger, “Jason Reed thinks wearing sunglasses indoors makes him look cool.” Amara blinked. “Second,” Lily continued, “he also thinks pineapple pizza is a personality trait.” Amara laughed despite herself. “Your point?” she asked. “My point,” Lily said dramatically, “is that Jason Reed’s opinion is completely worthless.” Amara shook her head, but the smile on her face stayed. “You make it sound easy,” she said. “It is easy,” Lily replied. “Step one: ignore him. Step two: focus on yourself.” Amara raised an eyebrow. “Focus on myself how?” Lily grinned. “Oh, I have ideas.” Amara suddenly felt suspicious. “What kind of ideas?” Lily leaned closer, her grin widening. “The kind that will make Jason regret ever opening his mouth.” Amara blinked. “You’re planning revenge?” “Not revenge,” Lily said thoughtfully. “Improvement.” Amara laughed softly. For the first time since yesterday, the tight knot in her chest loosened just a little. Maybe Lily was right. Maybe Jason’s words didn’t have to define her. Maybe this could be the beginning of something different. And somewhere down the hallway, Ethan Blake watched quietly as Amara laughed with Lily. It was the first genuine smile he had seen on her face since yesterday. And somehow, it made his day a little brighter too.
