Chapter 2: The Artifact’s Secret
The man’s presence was overwhelming, like a storm waiting to break. Aeryn’s hand tightened around the hilt of her dagger, though she knew she wouldn’t draw it unless she had no choice. He wasn’t an immediate threat—at least, not in the way she’d expected. But there was something about him, something ancient, that unsettled her in a way she couldn’t quite put into words.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The only sound was the wind rustling through the trees, carrying with it the soft hum of magic that seemed to pulse through the very air of the hidden kingdom.
Aeryn broke the silence first, unwilling to remain on edge any longer.
“Who are you?” she asked again, her voice firmer this time.
He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his eyes scanned the clearing, taking in the surroundings as if searching for something—or someone. Aeryn followed his gaze, but there was nothing but the silence of the forest and the distant spires of the kingdom beyond.
“My name is Kaelen,” he finally said, his voice laced with a calm that seemed unnatural in this place. “And you’re in far more danger than you realize.”
Aeryn frowned, her fingers loosening their grip on the dagger. There was no use in threatening him if he wasn’t an immediate danger. Yet, something about the way he spoke made her feel as if she were treading on the edge of a precipice, about to fall into an abyss she couldn’t see.
“Danger?” she echoed, trying to sound skeptical. “What danger? This kingdom is nothing but a legend, a myth. And I—”
“—am here for the same reason you are,” Kaelen finished for her, his eyes narrowing slightly as if he could see straight through her.
Aeryn’s breath caught in her throat. The artifact. Of course, he knew. He had to. No one else would be so bold as to enter the kingdom’s heart without reason.
“Then you know what I’m looking for,” she said, stepping closer, a sense of urgency creeping into her voice. “The artifact. The one that can bridge the worlds. I have to find it.”
Kaelen’s expression darkened, and for a moment, Aeryn saw something akin to fear flicker in his eyes—something fleeting, almost imperceptible. But it was enough to make her pause.
“You don’t understand,” he said softly, his gaze shifting away from hers. “That artifact… it’s not just a key. It’s a prison.”
Aeryn’s brow furrowed. “A prison?”
Kaelen nodded grimly. “It was created to keep two worlds in balance, yes. But it was also made to contain something—something that was never meant to be free. The artifact isn’t just a tool; it’s a cage. And if it’s unlocked, it could release powers that would destroy both worlds.”
Aeryn stepped back, her heart pounding. The weight of his words hung in the air like a storm cloud ready to burst. “What are you saying? You want me to leave it, to walk away?”
Kaelen met her gaze, his expression unreadable. “You don’t understand the price of what you’re asking. The artifact is tied to both of us, to the very fabric of this world. But it has a darker purpose than you know.”
Aeryn’s chest tightened as she processed his words. She had heard the stories—the artifact could either save her kingdom or tear it apart, depending on who wielded it. But she had never imagined it could be a prison, a vessel holding something dangerous. Something that shouldn’t be unleashed.
“I don’t care,” she said, her voice trembling with a mixture of determination and fear. “I have to find it. The fate of my people depends on it.”
Kaelen’s eyes softened for a brief moment, a flicker of something close to sympathy passing between them. But then he stepped closer, his voice low and intense.
“You don’t even know what it would cost. The power to save your kingdom comes at the cost of your soul. Or worse… the soul of someone you love.”
Aeryn’s breath caught in her throat. The weight of his words settled heavily in her chest. But she couldn’t back down now—not after everything she’d sacrificed to find this place.
“I’m not afraid,” she whispered, though her heart raced. “I’ll face whatever it takes.”
Kaelen’s eyes locked onto hers, and for the first time since they’d met, she saw something else in them—something softer. “You think you’re ready. But you’re not. This path you’re on—it’s far darker than you realize. And I’m not sure either of us will survive it.”
Before she could respond, Kaelen turned and began to walk away, his movements fluid and effortless, like a shadow in the fading light. Aeryn hesitated for only a moment before following him.
She had come too far to turn back now.
