Many years after
Amber stopped at just the corner of 34th Street in the crowd and gazed admiringly at the city. She loved the city and a very big thrill seized her.... The empire state building was being inaugurated....
They had a lot of time to watch it rise defiantly into the sky... It was a sign of hope in such bad times...
Her marriage to Ralf worked at times... 23 years married... and in love.... She wasn't so sure. Ralf was sometimes insipid...predictable...without substance....
She had a job as a switchboard operator...12 hours...sitting.... And then returned exhausted to the small apartment...they had come to America, running away from memories and, poverty, looking for a better life....
And with her...sister...to everybody..she was officially her sister....
