The First Shadow Temple

The tunnel beneath the Forbidden Forest seemed to have no end. Kael moved carefully through the darkness, one hand holding a small magical lamp while the other remained close to his sword. The deeper he went, the colder the air became. Ancient symbols covered the walls. Some looked like crowns. Others looked like stars. And several were identical to the strange black mark over Kael's heart. He stopped beside one of the symbols. "Who built this place?" He touched the wall. The moment his fingers made contact, his vision suddenly disappeared. A massive black throne appeared before him. Seven figures stood before it. They were wearing dark armor, and each carried a different weapon. A voice echoed through the darkness. "The Shadow Sovereign has fallen." The vision changed. The seven warriors turned toward a burning city. Then the throne became empty. A final image appeared. A young boy standing alone beneath seven black stars. Kael immediately pulled his hand away. The vision vanished. He breathed heavily. "What was that?" The system appeared before him. [Memory Seal Detected.] [The memory is currently inaccessible.] Kael frowned. "A memory seal?" He stared at the wall. "Whose memory?" The system gave no answer. Kael continued walking. Whatever this place was, it was connected to the Shadow Sovereign. And he intended to discover why. After several more minutes, the tunnel suddenly opened. Kael stepped into a gigantic underground chamber. He stopped. The room was enormous. Tall stone pillars stretched toward a ceiling hidden in darkness. Ancient statues stood on both sides of the chamber. Every statue wore a crown. At the far end stood a massive black door. Seven stars were carved across its surface. Kael immediately recognized the symbol. It was the same symbol that had appeared inside his vision. He approached the door. There was no handle. No lock. Only seven circular markings. Beneath them were ancient words. ONLY THE ONE WHO HAS LOST EVERYTHING MAY ENTER. Kael stared at the sentence. A bitter smile appeared on his face. "I've already lost everything once." He placed his palm against the door. The black mark over his heart suddenly burned. The seven stars began glowing. BOOM! The entire chamber shook. The door slowly opened. A wave of ancient energy rushed through the chamber. Kael shielded his eyes. When the dust settled, a staircase appeared beyond the doorway. He took a deep breath. Then he stepped inside. The door closed behind him. --- The staircase seemed endless. Kael descended for several minutes. The pressure around him became heavier with every step. His body began to feel strangely weak. Then the system appeared. [Ancient magical pressure detected.] [Shadow Sovereign Bloodline synchronization increasing.] [Current synchronization: 5%.] Kael stopped. The energy inside his body had changed. It was becoming easier to control. He continued descending. At 10% synchronization, the pressure suddenly disappeared. Kael looked at his hands. Dark energy slowly gathered around his fingers. "So the temple is helping me." He smiled. But the system immediately displayed another warning. [Warning.] [Current body cannot safely contain the complete Shadow Sovereign Bloodline.] [Further synchronization may cause severe physical damage.] Kael's smile disappeared. He understood. He couldn't simply unlock everything at once. His body had to become stronger first. "Fine." He continued down the stairs. Eventually, he reached another chamber. At its center stood a hooded stone warrior. The moment Kael entered, the statue moved. CRACK! Stone broke away from its body. A black sword appeared in its hand. Kael stepped backward. The system appeared. [Trial Guardian Detected.] [Name: Shadow Warden.] [Level: 15.] [Objective: Defeat the Shadow Warden.] [Restriction: No external weapons.] Kael looked at his sword. Then at the guardian. "You've got to be joking." The guardian suddenly disappeared. Kael's instincts screamed. He jumped sideways. A black sword cut through the air where his neck had been. Kael landed and immediately activated Shadow Step. WHOOSH! He appeared behind the guardian and punched it. The guardian barely moved. Kael stared at his hand. "That hurt." The guardian turned and attacked again. Kael dodged. Another strike. He ducked. Another. He stepped backward. The guardian was fast. Much faster than the wolves he had fought earlier. Kael refused to panic. He had fought stronger enemies before. The problem wasn't the guardian's strength. It was that he was still using his sixteen-year-old body. His muscles weren't strong enough to match his memories. He needed to fight smarter. The guardian attacked again. Kael watched its movements carefully. One strike. Two. Three. On the fourth attack, the guardian always shifted its weight toward its left side. Kael noticed a small c***k beneath its shoulder. "There." The guardian raised its sword. Kael didn't retreat. He moved forward. The blade passed beside his face. Kael stepped inside its attack range and struck the c***k. CRACK! The guardian staggered. Kael attacked again. The c***k widened. The guardian raised its other hand. Dark energy gathered in its palm. Kael immediately activated Shadow Step. A black beam exploded behind him. BOOM! The stone wall shattered. Kael looked at the destruction. "If that hit me, I'd be dead." The guardian charged again. Kael waited. At the final moment, he moved. He gathered the shadow energy inside his body into his right hand. Black flames surrounded his fist. "Shadow Strike." BOOM! His fist slammed into the damaged area. The guardian froze. A c***k spread across its entire body. Then— CRASH! The Shadow Warden shattered. Fragments of black stone scattered across the floor. The system appeared. [Trial Complete.] [Shadow Warden defeated.] [Experience gained.] [Level increased.] [Level: 1 → 4.] [Shadow Sovereign synchronization: 10% → 13%.] [New Skill Unlocked: Shadow Strike.] Kael stared at his hand. Black energy slowly faded from his fingers. He smiled. "Not bad." The broken pieces of the guardian suddenly floated into the air. They gathered together and formed a small black crystal. Kael picked it up. The moment he touched it, information entered his mind. Sword techniques. Footwork. Defensive movements. Methods of controlling shadow energy. Kael dropped to one knee. His head throbbed violently. "Too much..." The memories finally stopped. Kael remained still for several seconds. Then he slowly stood. His fighting knowledge had increased. The system appeared. [Passive Ability Acquired.] [Shadow Combat Insight.] [Effect: Increased understanding of shadow-based combat.] Kael looked at the crystal. "So this is what you were protecting." He placed it inside the Ring of the First Shadow. --- A stone door opened on the opposite side of the chamber. Kael entered a smaller room. At the center stood a stone pedestal. A black ring rested on top. The system immediately reacted. [Ancient Artifact Detected.] [Name: Ring of the First Shadow.] [Rank: Unknown.] [Condition: Sealed.] Kael picked it up. The ring was cold. The moment he placed it on his finger, the black mark over his heart pulsed. The ring disappeared into his skin. Kael's eyes widened. [Artifact Bonded.] [Ability Unlocked: Shadow Storage.] A small space appeared within his consciousness. Kael picked up a stone and thought about placing it inside. The stone vanished. He thought about bringing it back. It appeared in his hand. Kael smiled. "Useful." He turned toward the wall. Something had been carved behind the pedestal. He stepped closer. Seven Temples. Seven Seals. Seven Heirs. Only one shall reach the throne. Kael read the words twice. "Seven heirs?" Below them was another sentence. THE SHADOW SOVEREIGN DID NOT CREATE THE DARKNESS. HE SEALED IT. Kael froze. For centuries, humanity had been taught that the Shadow Sovereign was an ancient tyrant who nearly destroyed the world. But what if that story was false? What if the Shadow Sovereign had actually saved the world? Kael continued reading. WHEN THE SEVEN SEALS BREAK, THE ONE BENEATH THE WORLD WILL AWAKEN. A chill ran through him. He remembered the strange presence he had felt beneath the forest. The ancient creature. Could it be connected to the seals? Before Kael could think further, the system appeared. [Main Quest Updated.] [Seven Shadow Temples.] [Temples Discovered: 1/7.] [First Temple Cleared.] [Reward: Shadow Sovereign Map Fragment.] A black map appeared before him. Most of the continent was hidden. But seven points of light appeared across it. One was where he stood. The other six were scattered across distant lands. Kael stared at the map. In his previous life, he had spent fourteen years searching for the first Shadow Temple. Now, at sixteen, he had already found it. His second life was changing everything. Then— Footsteps echoed through the temple. Kael immediately became alert. Someone was coming. Voices followed. "Are you sure the signal came from here?" "Yes. The magical energy is strongest beneath this mountain." "Then the ancient temple must have awakened." Kael recognized the voices. A group of adventurers entered the chamber. Five people. At the front was a young man carrying a silver spear. Kael recognized him immediately. He had become one of the greatest knights of the Eastern Kingdom in Kael's previous life. But according to his memories, this man wasn't supposed to discover the temple for another fourteen years. Kael smiled. "So the future is already changing." One of the adventurers noticed the destroyed guardian. "Someone defeated the temple guardian." The spear-wielding man looked around. "Then we're too late." Kael remained hidden. He could fight them. But there was no reason to reveal himself. He activated Shadow Cloak. His presence disappeared completely. The group searched the chamber. They found nothing. Kael quietly moved toward the exit. Before leaving, he looked at the map once more. Six temples remained. Six unknown locations. And somewhere beyond them was the truth about the Shadow Sovereign. Kael stepped into the darkness. He didn't know that far beneath the Forbidden Forest, something ancient had sensed his awakening. A massive creature slowly opened its eyes. "The Shadow Heir..." Its voice shook the underground caverns. "...has returned." Thousands of miles away, another seal cracked. A mountain trembled. And inside a forgotten palace, a woman suddenly opened her eyes from a deep sleep. She whispered one name. "Kael..." The Shadow King's second life had begun. And this time, the world would not be ready for what he would become.
