Chapter 5

As we began to work on the assignment, I found myself stealing glances at Kaito. He was focused intently on the papers, his brow furrowed in concentration. I, on the other hand, was struggling to make sense of the assignment. The words blurred together on the page, and I couldn't seem to grasp the concept. Kaito noticed my struggles and raised an eyebrow. "You don't understand?" he asked, his voice tinged with surprise. I shook my head, feeling a sense of embarrassment. "No, I don't get it." Kaito sighed and took the papers from me. "Let me show you," he said, his voice softer than before. As he began to explain the concept, I found myself feeling drawn to him. He was patient and kind, and his eyes sparkled with intelligence. But just as I was starting to feel comfortable around him, he pulled back. "Got it?" he asked gruffly, his mask of indifference slipping back into place. I nodded, feeling a sense of disappointment. Why did he keep pushing me away? As we continued to work on the assignment, I couldn't help but wonder what secrets Kaito was hiding. And why he seemed so determined to keep me at arm's length. As we worked on the assignment, I couldn't help but steal glances at Kaito. He was focused intently on the papers, his brow furrowed in concentration. I, on the other hand, was struggling to keep my eyes off him. The way he moved, the way he spoke, everything about him seemed to captivate me. I felt like I was under some sort of spell, and I couldn't break free. As the class drew to a close, Mrs. Rina announced that we would be having a school festival the following week. "It's going to be a lot of fun," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "There will be games, food, and even a concert." I felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of the festival. It sounded like it was going to be an amazing event. As the class dismissed, Kaito stood up and began to pack up his things. I followed suit, my eyes fixed on him. "Hey, Kaito," I said, trying to sound casual. "What's the plan for the festival?" He turned to me, his eyes narrowing slightly. "I don't know," he said. "I haven't thought about it." I felt a pang of disappointment. I had been hoping that he would ask me to join him, or at least suggest that we hang out together. But instead, he just turned and walked away, leaving me feeling confused and frustrated. What was going on with Kaito? Why did he seem to be pushing me away? I watched as Kaito disappeared into the crowd of students, feeling a mix of emotions. I was confused, frustrated, and a little hurt. Why had he seemed so interested in me one minute, and then completely uninterested the next? I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. I had more important things to worry about than Kaito's mood swings. I needed to focus on uncovering the truth about my past and my new family. As I walked out of the classroom, I noticed a piece of paper on the floor. I picked it up, expecting it to be a discarded note or a crumpled up piece of trash. But instead, it was a flyer for the school festival. I smiled, feeling a surge of excitement. The festival was just what I needed - a chance to relax, have some fun, and maybe even get to know Kaito better. But as I looked closer at the flyer, I noticed something strange. There was a small note on the bottom, scrawled in handwriting that looked eerily familiar. "Meet me at the festival," it read. "Come alone." I felt a shiver run down my spine as I wondered who could have written the note, and what they wanted from me. I folded the flyer and tucked it into my pocket, my mind racing with questions. Who had written the note? And what did they want from me? As I walked through the school hallways, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me. I glanced over my shoulder, but there was no one there. I quickened my pace, my heart beating faster. Who was behind the mysterious note? And what did they have planned for the festival? As I turned a corner, I collided with Kaito. He was standing in the middle of the hallway, his eyes fixed intently on me. "Sorry," I said, feeling a flush rise to my cheeks. Kaito didn't respond. Instead, he reached out and grabbed my arm, his grip tight. "What's going on?" I asked, trying to shake him off. But Kaito just pulled me closer, his eyes burning with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. "You need to be careful," he whispered, his voice low and urgent. "There are people who are looking for you." I felt a shiver run down my spine as I wondered what Kaito was talking about. Who was looking for me? And why? But before I could ask any questions, Kaito let go of my arm and turned to walk away. "Wait!" I called out, but he just kept walking, disappearing into the crowd of students. I was left standing alone in the hallway, feeling confused and frustrated. What was going on? And why was Kaito being so mysterious? As I walked through the emptying hallways, I couldn't shake off the feeling that Kaito's words had left me with. Who could be looking for me? And why? I pushed the thoughts aside and focused on getting to my next class. But my mind kept wandering back to Kaito and his enigmatic behavior. As I entered the classroom, I spotted Sophia sitting at her desk, chatting with her friends. She caught my eye and smiled, and I felt a pang of gratitude towards her. She was one of the few people who had been kind to me since I arrived at this new school. I took my seat and tried to focus on the lesson, but my eyes kept drifting towards the door, wondering if Kaito would show up. The rest of the day passed in a blur. I went through the motions of attending classes and taking notes, but my mind was elsewhere. I couldn't shake the feeling that Kaito's words had left me with. As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, I gathered my things and headed out of the classroom. Sophia caught up with me in the hallway, a concerned look on her face. "Hey, Akira, is everything okay?" she asked. "You seemed a bit distracted in class today." I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But Sophia's kind expression put me at ease, and I found myself opening up to her. "It's just...I had a weird encounter with Kaito earlier," I said, trying to downplay the incident. Sophia's expression turned serious. "What happened?" she asked, her voice low. I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. But Sophia's curious expression encouraged me to continue. "He just said something weird," I said, trying to brush it off. "Something about people looking for me." Sophia's eyes widened, and she glanced around the hallway nervously. "Let's talk about this later, okay?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Meet me at the café after school tomorrow?" I nodded, feeling a sense of relief that Sophia was taking my concerns seriously. As we parted ways, I couldn't help but wonder what Sophia knew that I didn't. And what secrets was Kaito hiding?
