TWO When it was safely dark I slipped out to buy my two notebooks, a pencil, a pencil sharpener and an eraser. They seemed fine to me. Nothing of note occurred on this trip, although I must admit I had been anxious. As soon as you step foot out of the door, who knows what might happen? It is lunacy to be at large abroad, yet I came through unscathed. There were looks, of course, even though I skulked as best I could. The shopkeeper, who was clearly an old-hand at his game, eyed me suspiciously from the off, and paid close attention to the notes I handed him. If I had given him coins I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had bitten them. Perhaps I have the look of the criminal about me, and more so on that night, anxious and skulking as I was.
