NINE The next day saw the plan put into action. I still knew nothing of the plan, but I assumed that at least it would have to start. It started, for me, with yet another knock at my door, early, but I had had time to pootle about the house getting ready for I did not know what, really. Not knowing what I was readying myself for, perhaps I was not ready for what was to come, but I had Mr Samuel’s watchword in mind – get up and get on – and so got up and went on, or made ready to do so. Where had this urgency come from? I mean, my urgency, this sudden getting up and getting on, despite my aversion to it? Was it merely to placate Mr Samuels, to help him in his no doubt onerous duty?
