Chapter One - Best friends

Maya’s P.O.V “Ahh, can you believe we start College in a week?” I squealed to my best friend Nolan. “You are just excited for the parties and the hot College guys.” He laughed “And you are excited to learn more and study.” I giggled. Nolan and I are nineteen, starting College in a week. We are here now to get our apartment sorted. Our parents got us it. It was close to campus. That way we could be together for this new experience. Nolan and I have been best friends since we were two years old. We have been inseparable ever since. A lot of people wondered why we were best friends. Why? Cause we are polar opposites. I was a cheerleader in high school, very popular while Nolan was known as a nerd. He never really had any friends, only me and one other guy in our class. He would rather study…I would rather party. He was still a virgin, I was not. As I said we were very different. I wouldn’t change him for the world though. He has been my rock, the only guy that has always stuck with me. He was a special guy and he always will be to me. “I am not ashamed of being smart.” He laughed “And so, you shouldn’t be.” I smiled.                   “Do you think we are gonna survive this big bad world?” he chuckled. “Yes, as long as we stick together.” I smiled, hugging him. “Always,” he said hugging me back. We finally pulled up outside our apartment complex after driving for five hours. Our parents made sure we were in a secure building with a doorman. It was a two-bedroom apartment. It was a beautiful apartment. The kitchen and living room open plan. “Let go up and see it then we can get our things,” I said happily. He got out first, opening the car door for me to let me out. I smiled; he was always such a gentleman. He placed his hand on the small of my back as we headed in. He always did that; it was his way of showing his protectiveness towards me. He has been protective of me since I could remember. I was the same with him though. I punched more than a few guys in high school sticking up for him. Slapped a few bitches too for being cruel to him. No one messes with my best friend or they have me to deal with. “I can’t believe we are gonna be roommates. We need some sort of system for when you are hooking up with guys.” He laughed. “What about you? You not planning to be hooking up?” I asked “Yes, cause College girls are gonna be falling at my feet.” He said sarcastically. “Hey, you never know! You are a catch. Any girl would be lucky to have you.” I said ruffling his hair. He had no confidence; he never has done. Which is understandable with what he went through in high school. I never saw what everyone else seen. He was cute, sweet and more of a man than all those jocks in school. It was high school though; us girls prefer the bad boys. Why is that? Why do we do that to ourselves? I dated the biggest asshole in high school until I found out he was cheating on me with my so-called female best friend. I was quick to dump his ass after that. I was ready for college guys…not high school boys. “I am gonna be like that guy in the forty-year-old virgin, I am telling you.” He laughed. “Stop being a drama queen.” I giggled bumping my hip against his. “Hey! I am just being honest.” He said pouting. “If I have to, I will pay for a hooker for you,” I said teasing him. “It may just come down to that,” he laughed wrapping his arm around my shoulder. I swear if it is the last thing I do I am gonna get my best either a very sweet girlfriend or get him laid, whichever opportunity comes first. He hasn’t even had as much as his first kiss. I did offer but he said that would just be wrong and weird. It probably would have been. I took the key from my bag, letting us inside. “Oh My God, this place is amazing!” I gushed looking around. “I know right?” Nolan said looking around wide-eyed. “And all ours for the next three years,” I said smiling. I wondered what sort of memories we would make here. It was going to be amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better roommate than my best friend. “I couldn’t imagine going through this with anyone else.” He smiled hugging me. “Me neither,” I said resting my head on his shoulder. We explored our new home before heading down to the car to start bringing our things up. Thank God there were elevators, stuff walking five flights of stairs with all of this. That is not good for anyone. I made him carry all the heavy things, much to his dismay but he couldn’t resist when I fluttered my lashes at him. “I think you only keep me around for things like this.” He laughed “And to have someone to watch movies with,” I said shrugging. “Thanks,” he said pulling a sad face. I laughed, leaning over and kissing his cheek, “You know you are my favourite person in the world,” I said. “Well, I blooming hope so,” he said. “Always! You are the only guy that keeps me sane and has never broken my heart.” I smiled. “And I never will.” He said, “I always got your back.” he added. I knew he meant that when he said it. “I know and that is why I love you. That is Why you will always be my favourite guy.” I said. “What about when you get married?” He said “You will still be my number one,” I said winking at him. “Yeah, yeah. You say that now.” He said pretending to be sad. I reached in, prodding his nose, making us both laugh. I couldn’t imagine my life at any stage without him. We have been through so much together. I would have been a mess without him, and his high school experience probably would have been ten times worse without me. Yes, we were complete opposites, but we meshed well together. “I can never love any other man in the way I love you, sweetie,” I said grabbing his cheeks. “Aww, you are such a cheese ball at times. I love you too.” He said kissing my forehead. We got everything into the apartment, deciding to go look around. We had to find the best places to eat, the best places to shop and the best coffee shops. It was a must before anything else. I slipped my arm through his arm as we headed out. I rested my head on his shoulder. “I am so happy we are doing this together,” I said smiling up at him. “Me too.” He said kissing the top of my head. I knew it was going to be amazing. I am hoping college will help him find his confidence too. He needs that more than anything. No matter what, I am always gonna be here for him. Nothing is going to change that.
