As everyone locked up their garages and walked downtown to get some Christmas gifts, Miranda hopped into her car to drive to you know where…work. Amelia stayed with her best friend, Claudia, who lived across her street so Miranda saw no need to worry about her. Let’s make things up. Amelia needed to be happy again, Christmas or not. Miranda tapped her steering wheel for a while and picked up a notebook. First she would go to work, her boring task done and then buy Amelia a nice gift. Perhaps that would get her mind off Christmas for a while. Her birthday was still in two weeks. She doubted the child would wait that long to get a gift. And glow sticks! Yes glow sticks! She could appease her baby girl with some colorful lights. That too should be enough to make her stop talking about Christmas. But she had no money. Miranda groaned. Her pay hasn’t arrived yet and she doubted her boss would pay them before Christmas. Then her eyes lit up. Beg for advance payment! That’s exactly what she would do.
Her office was bustling as she expected. There was no doubt her boss prioritized work over the holidays. As she walked by his office, she heard his loud voice drowning that of the poor worker. She was probably appealing for a Christmas leave. Waste of time! Miranda rolled her eyes and got into her cubicle.
“Boss is looking for you,” her work partner snuck her head into her cubicle looking like a spy for a moment.
“What? Why?” Miranda asked with surprise. Her boss rarely calls for her, at least in the office. He had about 50 staff and he could have troubled with his loud tone. Not her.
“I guess you did something wrong,” the lady shrugged. “He has been handing out sack letters like pie these days.”
Miranda’s heart jolted. Sack letter?! That wasn’t something she needed to hear at that moment. In fact, she had no funds on her. How the hell would she get Amelia her gifts without her salary?
“You are joking, Danny,” she tried to wave it off as her joke.
“Why will I joke with a sack letter?” Danny asked with surprise. “Rose has been there for five minutes straight, probably begging him not to fire her. It’s better you look for an alternative way to win him over.”
It finally made sense to Miranda. That was why Rose's voice got drowned by her boss’s. The guy had no freaking patience.
“Miranda Druel! To my office now!” Her boss’s voice yelled for her from his office. Her body began to tremble, and she’d turn to Danny helplessly.
“Unbutton your shirt and show your cleavage,” Danny advised pointing on her robust chest. Miranda’s eyes widened in shock.
“Are you crazy? I am not doing that,” she grabbed the files from her desk in anger.
“Then you do not need your job,” Danny rolled her eyes.
“I am not that desperate, Danny….” Danny eyed her with an unbelievable look. “I mean, I am a little desperate but I have a daughter. I can’t just open my chest to my boss as I please.”
“You snooze you lose, Miranda,” Danny swayed her hands at her face with a click. “You have got to be smart. Men love the chest.”
Miranda eyed her helplessly unsure of what to do. She slowly unbuttoned her shirt, before changing her mind and buttoning them back up.
“No, I won’t be doing that,” she changed her mind, and then dashed out of her cubicle. Danny twisted her nose at her before releasing a hiss.
“I will help you pack your things!” She yelled after her.
Miranda stood before her boss’s office for a while, before taking a deep breath and walking in. Her boss was typing away on his laptop, staring at a document beside him. Then he picked it up and gazed at it. As he opened his lips to say a word, Miranda blurted out in desperation.
“Please don’t fire me, I haven’t gotten my daughter a Christmas gift yet and I am broke as hell. I need this money so badly, I could die of heartbreak if I don’t get it,” she said all in one breath.
Her boss eyed her in confusion before placing down the document.
“I am not firing you, in fact I am promoting you from being an Analyst to being a HR,” he said with a smile. Miranda’s eyes widened in shock.
“Huh?!” She couldn’t believe what she’d heard for a moment before she got herself together. “I mean…thank you so much sir. I…I…really appreciate a lot.”
“Your salary will increase by ten times and your daughter will get all the Christmas gifts she wants,” her boss grinned. “But it all comes with a price.”
Miranda already knew him too well. He never makes a deal without anticipating anything in return.
“I will perform better than the present HR,” she gave her world.
“Of course you will,” he nodded. “But not here. At Hillow.”
Her heart dropped. Wait?! What! Hillow? Her hometown? No! No! It couldn’t be. There was no way she was going back there.
“Sir, I…I can’t go to Hillow,” she immediately rejected. “I do not…”
“I heard you abandoned your family and husband there,” he said with arched brows. “This is your chance to reunite with them, Miranda.”
“I didn’t abandon my husband or family,” she defended herself. “I just…well…I just needed a new environment. We got divorced.”
“I do not care about your past,” her boss eyed her closely. “All I care about is my reputation. You are a reputable employee here and you know Hillow very well. I want you to take over our branch there.”
Miranda hated this deal so much.
“Sir, I really can’t…”
“You reject this offer, I fire you and you do not give your daughter her Christmas gift,” he smirked with an evil look.
Miranda couldn’t believe this was happening. Why weren’t they understanding her? She couldn’t freaking do this. She just can’t. She would have to freaking see her ex husband’s face again, and that of his shameless family members. Her body trembled with fright at the thought of that. They would take Amelia from her. They’d already troubled her on why she threw herself at their son. If she goes back to the toxic town, they would force her daughter back in the arms of those people. She…she couldn’t bear that. Without a word, she bursted out of the office and shut the door behind her.
“You are fired, Miranda!” Her boss screamed after her.
“I told you to show your boobs,” Danny eyed her in disappointment as she walked back to her seat.
“Not now, Danny. Not now,” she pleaded with her eyes tearing up. Danny grabbed hold of a box under her table and placed it on her desk.
“Start packing.”
