Chapter Two: Stepping into the Role

710 Words
The sunrise peeked through the blinds, sending a warm light over my small apartment. I was sitting at the kitchen table, sipping on a cold cup of coffee, my brain preoccupied with the events of the day. Today, I would finally meet Emily, Dr. Adrian Cole's daughter, and embark on the pretense of being her mother for her kindergarten's upcoming Family Week. The concept still seemed unreal, but the insistence in Adrian's voice when we initially met persuaded me of the magnitude of this role in his daughter's happiness. I got dressed with care, selecting a light blue blouse and faded jeans—friendly but neat. I put on a little makeup and practiced my smile in the mirror, trying to look warm and motherly. The ride to Adrian's house was quiet, allowing me enough time to practice possible dialogues and situations. I was surprised at the sophistication of his house—a lovely two-story house with a groomed lawn and flowers in bloom. Adrian met me at the door, his expression as calm as always. "Good morning, Lily. Thanks for coming." "Good morning," I replied, faking a smile. "I'm ready to go see Emily." He led me to the living room, where there was a young girl sitting on the floor coloring. She looked up when we entered, her big brown eyes questioning. "Emily, this is Lily," Adrian said. "She's going to help us with Family Week at school." Emily looked at me for a second, then smiled sheepishly. "Hi." "Hi, Emily," I said, crouching down to her level. "I like your picture. Is that a unicorn?" She nodded enthusiastically. "It's a flying unicorn that's magical." "That's incredible! I wish I could fly," I said, completely impressed with her imagination. As we talked about her paintings, I sensed a connection. Emily's innocence and fantasy were charming, and I found myself actually enjoying her presence. Over the next hour, we read books, played board games, and even cooked cookies together. Adrian watched from the periphery, now and then interjecting with a smile. Once Emily had gone to her bedroom to get changed, Adrian came over to me. "Thanks, Lily. She hasn't been like this in weeks." "She's a great kid," I replied. "I was happy to help." Adrian met me at the door, his expression as calm as always. "Good morning, Lily. Thanks for coming." "Good morning," I replied, pretending a smile. "I'm ready to visit Emily." He led me into the living room, where a young girl was sitting on the floor coloring. She looked up when we entered, her big brown eyes inquiring. "Emily, hi, it's Lily," Adrian said to her. "She's assisting us with Family Week in school." Emily studied me for a moment, then smiled shyly. "Hi." "Hello, Emily," I said, stooping to her level. "I like your picture. Is that a unicorn?" She nodded enthusiastically. "It's a magical unicorn that can fly." "That's incredible! I wish I had the ability to fly," I said, marveling at her imagination. As we discussed her paintings, I was experiencing a connection being built. Emily's innocence and creativity were endearing, and I was truly enjoying myself with her. The remainder of the hour was filled with playing games, reading books, and even baking cookies together. Adrian watched from afar, occasionally inserting himself with a smile. After Emily had gone to her room to get changed, Adrian came up to me. "Thanks, Lily. She hasn't been this bright in weeks." "She's a wonderful kid," I replied. "I'm glad I could help." He nodded, his face contemplative. "I believe this will work out well." As I was getting ready to go, Emily ran over and embraced my leg. "Will you come tomorrow?" I smiled, moved by her affection. "Yes, Emily. I'll see you tomorrow." As I drove home, I couldn't help but think about the events of the day. What started out as a favor was rapidly turning into something significant. I was getting invested in a role that was my second nature. That night, while I was asleep, my phone vibrated with a text from a number I did not know: "We need to discuss your new 'family.' Meet me tomorrow at 10 AM. Do not say anything to Adrian."
