When I come to, my eyelids feel like lead. The hospital room's quiet, empty, but I hear Brooke's voice in the hallway, talking to a wolf. "She's probably waking up soon. You're not going in?" "Nah, don't tell her I was here." Brooke snorts. "How long are you gonna play the silent hero? Why not just tell her—" A phone rings, cutting her off. The wolf answers, then says, "I've got a work trip coming up. Call me if anything happens." His footsteps fade into the elevator. Brooke walks in, her eyes red with guilt as she sees me bandaged up. "Lauren, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have dragged you to that stew place. Don't worry, when you're out, I'm taking you to a med spa. No way you're keeping any scars."
