Chapter Eleven: Shattered Calm
Eleanor sat on her bed staring at the broken glass in her palm—a piece from her car window. The warning note burned in her mind. Miranda. Of course it was her. That kind of possessive venom had Miranda’s name all over it.
But Eleanor didn’t cry. Not this time.
Instead, she texted Ryan: We need to talk.
They met that night by the lake. As usual, the stars reflected like a mirror on the water’s surface, but the calm was gone.
“She’s trying to scare me,” Eleanor said. “She won’t stop.”
Ryan clenched his fists. “I should’ve shut this down months ago.”
“No. She’s your past, Ryan. I’m your now. We fight this together.”
He pulled her into a tight hug. “I won’t let her touch you.”

But Miranda wasn’t done.
The next week, Eleanor’s prom dress disappeared from her locker. A replacement note was found in its place: Still think he’s worth it?
Eleanor reported it, but no one saw anything. The school couldn’t prove it was Miranda.
Jasmine stood by Eleanor’s side through it all. “She’s unraveling,” she told her. “Desperate people do desperate things.”
Ryan became protective—walking Eleanor to and from class, ignoring his own temper.
“I can’t lose you,” he told her one night.
“You won’t.”

Prom night approached like a storm cloud. Tension thickened with every passing day. Eleanor bought a new dress. Ryan borrowed a suit from his brother. They were determined to go, no matter what.
But the real storm hit the night before prom.
Ryan’s house was broken into. His brother’s car was keyed. Spray paint marked the front wall: TRASH STAYS TRASH.
Ryan wanted to fight. To scream. But he didn’t. He called the police. He reported it. He did everything right.
And Eleanor saw it.
“You’re changing,” she whispered. “For real.”
He took her hand. “For you.”

As prom night finally dawned, Eleanor looked in the mirror, her heart pounding. Despite everything—the threats, the pain, the chaos—she was going. With him.
And nothing was going to stop her.
